[APPLAUSE] THANK YOU, MR. OLSON.
CARRYING ON WITH OUR MIDDLE-SCHOOL STUDENT RECOGNITION.
FIRST UP, WE HAVE STRIKE MIDDLE-SCHOOL WITH AN EIGHTH GRADER.
WITH THIS, I'M GOING TO TURN IT OVER TO MR. BILL BUSH, OUR PRINCIPAL AT STRIKE MIDDLE-SCHOOL, AND HE'LL TALK ABOUT HIS STUDENT OF THE MONTH.
>> GOOD EVENING. IF I CAN GET BRIAN RAYS TO COME UP.
[APPLAUSE] IF I CAN GET MR. WEAVER TO COME UP TOO.
[APPLAUSE] WHEN WE STARTED TALKING ABOUT WHO WE WANTED TO DO FOR OUR STUDENT OF THE MONTH, WE ALWAYS ASK TEACHERS FOR DIFFERENT INPUTS AND SO I WAS LIKE, WHY DON'T WE SHOULD JUST GET ALL OF OUR TEACHERS? WE'LL JUST GOING TO START DOING THIS AND HAVE ALL OF OUR TEACHERS COME UP AND RECOGNIZE THE STUDENTS INDIVIDUALLY.
BUT MR. WEAVER DEFINITELY WANTED TO COME AND BE A PART OF THIS, AND SO I'M GOING TO LET HIM SPEAK AS WELL.
I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT FROM MR. JARED, MR. JARED HAD SOME GREAT THINGS TO SAY ABOUT BRIAN.
MR. JARED IS OUR ART TEACHER, AND HE SAID ABOUT BRIAN, HE WORKS HARD, EXPECTS THE MOST FROM HIMSELF ON A REGULAR BASIS AND CARES BEYOND WHAT THE AVERAGE EIGHTH GRADER TENDS TO DO.
WHILE HE MIGHT BE A LITTLE TOO TOUGH ON HIMSELF AT TIMES, AS LONG AS HE CONTINUES TO GIVE HIMSELF SOME BREATHING ROOM, HE'S GOING TO ACHIEVE IN HUGE WAYS.
THE AMOUNT OF GROWTH I'VE SEEN FROM BRIAN IS TREMENDOUS.
I'M SO PROUD OF HIS GROWTH AS AN INDIVIDUAL, AN ARTIST, A STUDENT, AND ABSOLUTELY CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR HIM. WE CAN CLAP.
[APPLAUSE] I'M GOING TO LET MR. WEAVER TALKING AND JUST SECOND AND FINISH THIS UP.
BUT I WILL ALSO SAY, I GOT TO KNOW BRIAN A LOT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR AND HE HAS COME SO FAR, SO VERY PROUD OF YOU, BRIAN.
I'M GOING TO LET MR. WEAVER FINISHED UP FOR US. RIGHT THIS WAY.
>> GOOD EVENING, AND THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO INVITE ME AND SPEAK ON BEHALF OF BRIAN.
WORKING IN THE SCHOOLS, IT'S JUST AMAZING HOW MUCH OF AN IMPACT STUDENTS CAN HAVE ON OUR LIVES, JUST AS MUCH AS WE CAN IMPACT THEIRS.
TO SEE BRIAN THIS YEAR GETTING TO KNOW HIM AND TO LEARN OF HIS INTEGRITY, TO LEARN OF HIS PERSEVERANCE, TO SEE HOW HE HAS SET GOALS AND SET WHAT ARE SOME POSSIBLE ROADBLOCKS FROM MY GOALS? WHAT'S MY OPTION A, B, AND SOMETIMES EVEN C, RIGHT, BRIAN? HOW AM I GOING TO ACCOMPLISH THESE GOALS? IT'S BEEN VERY INSPIRING TO ME AS A PROFESSIONAL AS WELL, SO I'M JUST HONORED TO BE UP HERE TO SEE BRIAN RECEIVE THIS AWARD. THANK YOU.
> IF WE CAN GO AND GET BRIAN'S FAMILY TO STAND UP AS WELL TO RECOGNIZE THEM.
>> GREAT JOB, BRIAN. CONGRATULATIONS. THANK YOU, MR. WEAVER AND MR. BUSH.
MOVING ONTO WALKER MIDDLE SCHOOL, WE HAVE OUR INTERIM PRINCIPLE MS. LINDA OPITS, MAKING HER WAY UP TO YOU TO TALK ABOUT THEIR STUDENT OF THE MONTH.
>> GOOD EVENING TO THE BOARD INTO MR. LAMB, I'D LIKE TO INVITE TRINITY DARRINGTON TO JOIN ME AT THE PODIUM.
[APPLAUSE] I WANT Y'ALL TO KNOW THAT WRITING A SPEECH ABOUT THIS YOUNG LADY WAS NOT HARD TO DO.
MR. PEE, WHO'S HER THEATER ARTS TEACHERS, STARTED THIS ALL OFF BY SAYING, TRINITY HAS BEEN A POSITIVE FORCE IN MY CLASSROOM ALL YEAR.
SHE EXEMPLIFIES OUR CORE VALUES.
SHE INSPIRES OTHERS TO BE BETTER THAN THEY THOUGHT THEY COULD BE.
[00:45:01]
SHE'S A SOURCE OF ENCOURAGEMENT.HER HONESTY AND FORTHRIGHT NATURE MAKES HER A ROLE MODEL FOR EVERYONE.
COACH BROWN AND MS. MAKITA BOTH SPOKE OF TRINITY'S WORK ETHIC.
SHE'S KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE STAFF AS A HARD WORKING, DEDICATED STUDENT.
SHE'S MOTIVATED TO DO HER BEST, AND YET SHE HAS TIME TO LEND A HAND TO ANY OF HER CLASSMATES.
AS HER TEACHER SPOKE OF NUMEROUS INCIDENCES WHERE SHE'S REACHED OUT TO BE A FRIEND OR TO HELP A CLASSMATE.
MR. JAMIESON KNOWS MS. TRINITY IS A STUDENT WHO EXCELS IN BOTH THE CLASSROOM AND IN SPORTS.
HE STATED, "TRINITY REPRESENTS WALKER AS A STUDENT ATHLETE AND SHE IS A KNOWN LEADER ON OUR CAMPUS." MS. HAVERMAN ADDED TRINITY'S KIND-HEARTED AND A TRUE FRIEND TO EVERYONE.
THEN HER LANGUAGE ARTS TEACHER, MS. DODSON, HAD THE FINAL WORD.
TRINITY IS THE AN EXAMPLE OF A STUDENT WITH GOOD CHARACTER.
WHEN ASKED TO HELP, SHE NEVER HESITATES.
WHEN SHE WINS A TREAT IN CLASS, SHE JUST SHARED IT WITH EVERYBODY ELSE. SHE DOESN'T EVEN EAT IT.
SHE'S SELFLESS AND THOUGHTFUL AND PUTS OTHERS BEFORE HERSELF.
TRINITY, IT'S BEEN A REAL PLEASURE WORKING WITH YOU HERE AT SCHOOL.
I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT IT'S LIKE FOR YOUR FAMILY TO BE IN OUR AUDIENCE AND LISTEN TO WHAT YOUR TEACHERS HAD TO SAY ABOUT YOUR ACTIONS EVERY DAY.
SO WE HONOR YOU AS OUR MAY STUDENT OF THE MONTH.
CONGRATULATIONS IT'S A PLEASURE WORKING WITH YOU.
>> WITH TRINITY'S FAMILIES STAND ON HEARD A CHEERING SECTION BACK THERE.
MOVE IT INTO THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF THE MONTH.
I WILL TELL YOU THAT EVERY MONTH WE HAVE HAD OUR STUDENTS FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL HERE.
I RECEIVED A PHONE CALL AT 05:15 THIS EVENING, AND SO AFTER I LET YOU KNOW, OUR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND WHO RECEIVED THIS AWARD, YOU'LL KNOW THAT THEY HAVE TONS OF THINGS THAT THEY ARE DOING WRAPPING UP THEIR HIGH SCHOOL CAREER, MOVING ON TO POST-SECONDARY EXPERIENCES.
WITH THAT BEING SAID, OUR TWO STUDENTS OF THE MONTH ARE NOT HERE TONIGHT, AND THEY CALLED THE PRINCIPAL AND SAID THEY COULDN'T MAKE IT.
BUT I WANT TO TAKE THIS TIME BECAUSE THEY HAVE WORKED SO HARD AND IT IS OUR VALEDICTORIAN AND OUR SALUTATORIAN FOR THE CLASS OF 2023.
SO GIGI, WIN OUR VALEDICTORIAN AND ALSO HANNAH WOODWARD OUR SALUTATORIAN WHERE THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF THE MONTH.
[APPLAUSE] I DON'T KNOW IF MAYBE THEIR PARENTS OR STUDENTS WERE WATCHING, BUT I WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE GAVE THEM A SHOUT OUT AND THEY VERY MUCH DESERVE IT AND EVERYBODY UNDERSTANDS AS SOON AS I SAY, VAL AND SAL, THEY KNOW THEY HAVE TONS OF COMMITMENTS AND THINGS THAT THEY ARE DOING GETTING READY FOR THEIR GRADUATION COMING UP ON FRIDAY.
THAT CONCLUDES STUDENT RECOGNITION.
I DO WANT TO DO ONE THING THOUGH, AND WE SHOULD HAVE DONE THIS AT THE FIRST.
I WOULD LIKE ALL PARENTS OF CTE STUDENTS, FINE ARTS STUDENTS, STUDENT RECOGNITION, ANYBODY AND EVERYBODY.
WE CAN'T DO IT WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT.
IT IS AN HONOR THAT WE HAVE EVERY DAY TO BE IMPACTED BY YOUR CHILDREN, AND SO I WOULD LIKE PARENTS AND GUARDIANS PLEASE STAND UP AND BE RECOGNIZED FOR EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO WITH YOUR CHILD.
[APPLAUSE] THANK Y'ALL VERY MUCH.
WE HAD A LOT TO CELEBRATE, SO TURN IT OVER TO MR. OLSEN. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH, MR. ROBERTS.
FOR OUR YOUNGER ONES, I'LL GO AHEAD AND GIVE A QUICK BREAK HERE.
IF THE YOUNGER ONES UNDER SIX GRADE WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE WITH THEIR PARENTS, I KNOW THEY PROBABLY GET HOME AND GET CLOSER TO BEDTIME.
MAYBE A LITTLE HOMEWORK CRAM IN.
THE OLDER ONES I'D LIKE TO STICK AROUND, SO I WOULD LIKE TO MOVE ONE TOPIC UP,
[7. Reports of the Superintendent]
WHICH IS ITEM C, MR. LAMB, IF YOU DON'T MIND, I'D LIKE TO MOVE ON AND SEE UP TO THE VERY BEGINNING OF YOUR REPORT FOR MAYBE SOME PEOPLE WOULD LIKE TO LISTEN.IF ANYBODY WANTS TO LEARN ABOUT THE HIGH SCHOOL BLOCK SCHEDULE,
[00:50:02]
THEY MAY WANT TO STICK AROUND.[LAUGHTER] [BACKGROUND] I TRIED.
ALL RIGHT MR. LAMB WILL GO AND GO TO ITEM C. I WAS HOPING MAYBE A FEW WOULD STICK AROUND TO LISTEN TO THE HIGH SCHOOL BLOCK SCHEDULE.
BUT WELL, THANK YOU ALL FOR STICKING IT OUT.
WE GREATLY APPRECIATE THE AUDIENCE OUT THERE.
THANK YOU-ALL. MR. LAMB, I WILL TURN IT OVER TO YOU, SIR.
>> YES, YOU ARE. I SEE YOUR SCREEN UP THERE.
>> DO I HAVE TO STAND BEHIND THIS TO BE HEARD WELL? LOTS OF THOUGHTS AND QUESTIONS HAVE COME UP ABOUT THE BLOCK SCHEDULE.
I'M GLAD TO HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO TALK ABOUT IT.
I'M GOING TO SHARE WITH YOU PROBABLY MORE THAN YOU WANT TO KNOW.
I THINK A LOT OF HISTORY AND THINGS COME INTO PLAY THAT HAS TO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION AND SO I START WITH THIS SLIDE THAT SAYS A FEW THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND.
THE LAW SAYS WE'RE TO BE IN SCHOOL A MINIMUM OF SEVEN HOURS A DAY, AND THAT'S BEEN AROUND FOR A LONG TIME.
THE LAW CHANGED AROUND 2008 THAT HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS WOULD NEED TO GO 24-26 CREDITS, THAT BECOMES PRETTY SIGNIFICANT IN A DECISION LIKE THIS.
THE LAW ALSO CHANGED ABOUT THAT SAME TIME THAT THE CTE COURSES AS WE KNOW THEM NOW, AND ENDORSEMENTS THAT WE DID, THAT ALL GOT BEEFED UP SOMEWHERE AROUND 2008.
THERE WERE ED CLASSES AND HOMEMADE CLASSES WHEN WE WERE ALL IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT NOTHING IS ORGANIZED AS WE HAVE NOW IN THE CTE PROGRAMS AND THE ENDORSEMENTS THAT ARE REQUIRED.
THE TREND BECAME A BACK THEN THIS SEVEN-HOUR DAY AND I WOULD TELL YOU THE SEVEN-HOUR DAY, THERE WAS A TIME 10-15 YEARS AGO, YOU COULDN'T FIND A SCHOOL THAT WAS GOING MUCH MORE THAN SEVEN HOURS BECAUSE THAT WAS THE MINIMUM.
BUT SLOWLY, BUT SURELY, WHAT WE ENDED UP REALIZING SOME OF US STARTED PUSHING THAT SEVEN HOURS TO SEVEN HOURS AND 30 MINUTES, SEVEN HOUR 40 MINUTES TO GET IN TUTORIAL TIMES AND HOMEROOMS. THEN A FEW YEARS BACK, THE COUNTING MINUTES CAME INTO PLAY.
A LOT OF US WERE ALREADY GOING ABOVE THE SEVEN HOUR TIME LIMIT AND SO IT MADE SENSE ALL OF A SUDDEN TO GET CREDIT FOR SOME OF THAT BECAUSE WE WERE GOING ABOVE THAT SEVEN HOURS FOR THE PURPOSE OF THE TUTORIALS AND WHAT HAVE YOU.
THEN JUST THIS LAST YEAR, THE CCMR POINTS HAS BECOME EVEN MORE CRITICAL THAN EVER BEFORE TOWARDS OUR ACCOUNTABILITY.
SOME OF THE CHANGES THAT ARE COMING WERE GOING TO COME ANYWAY BECAUSE OF THIS CCMR EMPHASIS THAT THE STATE IS PUTTING IN THE ACCOUNTABILITY.
I'LL REFER BACK TO THESE YEARS, COLLEGE CAREER, MILITARY READINESS ARE HUGE PART OF THE HIGH SCHOOL ACCOUNTABILITY AND THE DISTRICT ACCOUNTABILITY AND HAS BEEN FOR SEVERAL YEARS NOW.
JUST A LITTLE HISTORY, IF YOU REMEMBER BACK A TRADITIONAL SEVEN-PERIOD DAY, THEY TYPICALLY HAD TO BE A ROUGHLY 50 MINUTES.
THERE WAS ALWAYS THAT ONE THAT WAS A LITTLE LONGER TO DO THE PLEDGE AND WHAT HAVE YOU, SO THAT SECOND CLASS IS THE 55 MINUTES.
I SHOW THIS AGAIN, 8:00-3:00 WAS THAT NORMAL SEVEN-HOUR DAY.
SOMETIMES PEOPLE WOULD GO 8:30-3:30, BUT YOU USED TO RARELY FIND ANYTHING OVER THIS SEVEN-HOUR TIME.
I'LL SHOW A LITTLE BIT OF A TRICK.
THE TRICKIEST THING TO ANY MASTER SCHEDULE IS MAKING LUNCH WORK.
IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, IF I WANT 50 MINUTE CLASSES, BUT I NEED SAY, THREE LUNCHES, HOW LONG DOES THAT HAVE TO BE TO DO THREE LUNCHES? THIRTY MINUTES EACH, THAT'S GOT TO BE 90 MINUTES.
HOW DO YOU GET 90 MINUTES WITH A 50-MINUTES CLASS AND A 30-MINUTE LUNCH? THERE'S ALL KINDS OF TRICKS YOU PLAY AND WHAT YOU SEE OVER THERE, TURNS OUT THOSE CLASSES ARE 55 MINUTES, AND DIFFERENT THINGS HAPPEN DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU DO.
THAT BECOMES IMPORTANT WHEN YOU START TALKING ABOUT BLOCK.
I GO BACK TO REMIND THAT THAT TALKS ABOUT THAT FIRST BULLET.
[00:55:04]
IT'S JUST A REMINDER OF WHAT THAT SEVEN-HOUR DAY USED TO LOOK LIKE.IT USED TO LOOK LIKE A SEVEN-PERIOD DAY AS WELL.
THE SECOND BULLET THAT TALKS ABOUT THE CHANGE TO THE 26 CREDITS AND JUST IT TOOK ME AWHILE TO HUNT UP OLD HANDBOOKS.
THIS IS A HANDBOOK FROM 2004, 2005 THAT SHOWS AT THE TOP, A STUDENT MUST EARN 24 CREDITS TO COMPLETE THE DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT, BUT THAT WAS 24, EVEN FOR THE MID-LEVEL RANGE BACK THEN.
KEEP IN MIND IF YOU LOOK AT NUMBER 1, 2, AND 3, WE DIDN'T HAVE TO DO FOUR CLASSES OF EVERYTHING BACK THEN EITHER.
ONLY THREE CREDITS OF MATH WERE REQUIRED AND ONLY THREE CREDITS OF SCIENCE WERE REQUIRED.
YOU SEE THERE ON THE TWO AND THE THREE.
THAT BECOMES SIGNIFICANT TO KEEP IN MIND.
IN THE SEVEN-PERIOD DAY, SEVEN TIMES FOUR IS 28, WHEN ALL YOU NEED IS 24 CREDITS, YOU CAN ESSENTIALLY GET TO THE END AND HAVE FOUR THINGS LEFTOVER.
THAT'S WHERE THINGS LIKE EARLY RELEASE, LATE ARRIVAL CAME FROM.
BUT IF YOU THINK ABOUT THE 24 CREDITS, SOMEBODY LIKE ME IN HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE ANYTIME PDE IS ALWAYS LISTED JUST ONE TIME.
BUT WHEN YOU TAKE ATHLETICS FOUR YEARS, YOU ESSENTIALLY GET ONE CREDIT BECAUSE THAT'S ALL THAT'S NECESSARY AND THE OTHER THREE TIMES I TAKE IT, CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT TO, IT'S SOMEWHAT WASTED.
IT DOESN'T COUNT TOWARDS ANYTHING.
THAT'S WHERE THE FOUR YOU'VE TEED UP SOMETIMES.
YOU COULD LEGITIMATELY COME INTO AND WE DEALT WITH A LOT OF THIS BACK THEN.
IF YOU HAD YOUR 24 CREDITS OUT OF THE WAY, YOU COULD GO INTO YOUR SENIOR YEAR AND ONLY NEED THREE CLASSES AND SO SOME PEOPLE WOULD DOUBLE UP JUNIOR YEAR, A LOT OF EARLY GRAD.
AGAIN, WHAT MADE THAT VERY POSSIBLE WAS NOT NEEDING FOUR MATH, FOUR SCIENCES, THAT THING.
AROUND 2010, IT CHANGED TO 26 CREDITS AND NOT ONLY DID IT CHANGE TO 26 CREDIT, IT CHANGED TO WHAT WE CALL THE FOUR-BY-FOUR, YOU NEEDED NOW FOR MATH, FOUR ENGLISH, FOUR SCIENCES, FOUR SOCIAL STUDIES.
THAT CHANGED THINGS PRETTY SIGNIFICANTLY.
THE 26 CREDITS AND HAVING TO HAVE FOUR OF EVERYTHING CHANGED THAT DYNAMIC.
BASICALLY, WHEN EVERYBODY WAS IN A SEVEN-PERIOD DAY, YOU HAD TO START LOOKING AT WHAT I WOULD SAY IS AN EIGHT-PERIOD DAY.
I'VE LISTED THERE ALL THE REQUIREMENTS.
THE FIRST 16 BLOCKS ARE THE FOUR MATH, FOUR ENGLISH, FOUR SCIENCE, FOUR SOCIAL STUDIES.
YOU HAVE TO HAVE TWO FOREIGN LANGUAGE, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 SELECTIVES, A FINE ART, AND A PE.
NOW, WE REQUIRE WITHIN ONE OF THOSE ELECTIVES, SPEECH AND HEALTH, BUT STILL THE SAME THING 26.
NOW INSTEAD OF FOUR EXTRA, THERE SIX EXTRA.
YOU COMPOUND THE PROBLEM JUST A LITTLE BIT, EXCEPT FOR THE STUDENTS THAT WANT TO DO MULTIPLE THINGS.
WHAT WE REALIZED IF YOU TRY TO STAY WITH A 26 IN A SEVEN-PERIOD DAY, YOU END UP WITH TWO EXTRA AND YOU CAN'T DO THREE OTHER FOOTBALLS WITH THAT.
YOU CAN'T DO A LOT OF THINGS WITH THE TWO EXTRA.
THE SIX EXTRA BECAME ALMOST A MANDATORY THING UNDER THOSE CIRCUMSTANCES.
BUT WHAT IT ALLOWED FOR THE STUDENTS THAT WANT TO DO A CT SERIES AND ATHLETICS, ATHLETICS AND BANNED.
IT REALLY STARTED TO OPEN IT UP FOR THE KIDS THAT WANTED TO DO MULTIPLE THINGS.
THE POINT I MADE HERE IS, ALL THIS IS AN EVOLUTION AND YOU SAY, WHY ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT A SEVEN-PERIOD DAY? THERE'S STILL SCHOOLS TO THIS DAY.
ONE VERY CLOSE TO US THAT'S DOING A SEVEN-PERIOD DAY.
I WOULD SAY IN THIS DISCUSSION, I WON'T EVEN CALL IT AN ARGUMENT, IN THE DISCUSSION THE FIRST THING YOU'VE GOT TO REALLY DECIDE IS EIGHT-PERIOD OR SEVEN-PERIODS.
I THINK THERE'S NO QUESTION, THE EIGHT-PERIOD BECOMES MORE OPTIMAL FOR EVERYTHING THAT WE'VE TALKED ABOUT.
BACK JUST A LITTLE BIT THAT THE ENDORSEMENTS ARE A BIG DEAL WHEN I WOULD SAY CTE CANNOT FLOURISH WITHOUT THE EIGHT-PERIOD SELECTION.
WHEN YOU CUT THAT DOWN TO A SEVEN-PERIOD AND YOU LEAVE ONLY TWO PIECES OF WIGGLE ROOM, REALLY YOU LOSE A LOT OF THAT ABILITY TO BE IN THOSE DOUBLE BLOCK CTE CLASSES.
I'VE ADVISED A LOT OF SCHOOLS IN THE PAST.
THERE'S LOTS OF PEOPLE THAT THINK THEY WANT TO GO FROM AN EIGHT PERIOD DAY TO A SEVEN PERIOD. DON'T DO IT.
IT'LL CATCH YOUR CTE MONEY AND SURE ENOUGH, I SEE OVER AND OVER PEOPLE THAT DO THAT ARE REALLY HURTING THEMSELVES WITH THE CTE FUNDING AND EVERYTHING THAT GOES WITH IT.
EIGHT-PERIOD AGAIN, VERY OPTIMAL.
THEN IF THE EIGHT-PERIOD DAY OR EIGHT-PERIOD SELECTION IS BETTER THAN SEVEN AND I PUT IT LIKE THIS TO SHOW THAT IT WASN'T A LITTLE TOURNAMENT THERE.
[01:00:01]
LET'S START TALKING ABOUT AN EIGHT-PERIOD DAY, SAY VERSUS A TRADITIONAL BLOCK, AND WE ALL ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE TRADITIONAL BLOCK THAT'S AN AB ALTERNATING 90 MINUTES.HOPEFULLY, YOU CAN TELL AND SEE THOSE ARE REALLY THE SAME.
THAT'S JUST OVER TWO DAYS, OVER ONE DAY.
BUT ALL THE SAME BENEFITS COME FROM THAT BLOCK THAT COME FROM AN EIGHT-PERIOD DAY.
I HESITATE, I ALWAYS SAY, WELL, WHAT SCHEDULE DO YOU HAVE.
FOR EXAMPLE THE FIRST ANSWER I ALWAYS GOT HERE WAS A SEVEN-PERIOD DAY.
WE DON'T HAVE A SEVEN-PERIOD DAY HERE BECAUSE WE HAVE AN EIGHT-PERIOD SELECTION.
HOWEVER YOU WANT TO SAY THAT, IT'S AN EIGHT PERIODS SELECTION.
BUT TOMORROW THAT MIDDLE-CLASS IS GOING TO BE DIFFERENT.
THE TRADITIONAL BLOCK IS BEEN DONE MANY WAYS OVER THE YEARS.
YOU CAN CUT THE FIRST TWO BLOCKS AND THOSE BECOME 50 MINUTES ALL YOUR OWN CLASSES WHERE THE OTHER THREE ALTERNATE NONE, LOTS OF PEOPLE DO THIS.
YOU CAN TAKE THE TWO 50-MINUTES CLASSES, PUT ONE AT THE END, ONE AT THE BEGINNING.
IS THAT EVERYBODY'S FAR RIGHT? YES. THAT'S WHAT ALAN IS ON RIGHT NOW.
THE ONE IN THE MIDDLE IS THE ONE I TAUGHT ON AND PRINCIPLED ON IN LINDOW FOR SEVERAL YEARS.
ANOTHER VERSION OF BLOCK, BUT AGAIN CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT TO THE EIGHT-PERIOD SELECTION.
SOMETIMES YOU CAN CUT TWO OF THE 90 MINUTES BLOCKS AND YOU END UP WITH FOUR 50 MINUTES PERIODS AND FOUR 90 MINUTES PERIOD.
I USED TO DO PRESENTATIONS ON THIS ALL THE TIME AND WOULD ALWAYS SAY, YOU CAN ACTUALLY CUT THREE.
I DON'T KNOW ANYBODY THAT DOES THAT UNTIL NOW BECAUSE THIS IS THE ONE LEVEL.
THIS IS THE ONE WHERE I SHOW THE SEVEN PERIODS SCHEDULE IN THE LUNCH.
WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS? BLOCK BECOMES THE MOST EFFICIENT THING YOU CAN POSSIBLY DO WHEN IT COMES TO LUNCH BECAUSE YOU CAN DO FOUR 30 MINUTES LUNCHES AND EVERY TIME YOU TAKE A LUNCH, IT LEAVES 90 MINUTES.
WHEN YOU STACK 30 MINUTES AT FOUR TIMES AND PUT TWO HOURS TOGETHER, IT'S ABSOLUTELY THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY TO DO LUNCHES COMPARED TO THAT SEVEN-PERIOD WHERE SOMETIMES YOU LEFT THAT BEING THE 50 AND 55 MINUTE CLASS.
I SAY ALL THAT AND YOU SAY, WELL, WHY DO WE SAY IT'S EFFICIENT? AGAIN, THE FOUR LUNCHES STACK TOGETHER.
BUT THEN IF YOU'VE CUT OFF FOUR WHAT DO YOU END UP WITH? THAT CONNECT ME A DAY.
I SAY ALL THAT TO MAKE THE POINT.
ALL THESE ARE SOMEWHAT THE SAME, ESSENTIALLY THE SAME BUT THEY'RE FOR THE SAME REASON.
WE'D BEEN DOING ONE FOR A LONG TIME.
ANY KNOCK AGAINST SAY WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO DO WITH A 90 MINUTE PERIOD, WE HAVE THOSE NAP.
IT'S REALLY JUST SELECTING THE VERSION OF BLOCK, AND I WOULD SAY ONE OF THESE IS THE MOST OPTIMAL COMPARED TO SAY, SEVEN PERIOD DAY.
YOU START LOOKING FOR AND NO SYSTEM IS PERFECT.
ALL WE'RE GOING TO HAVE PROBLEMS. THE QUESTION IS, WHICH ONE HAS THE SET OF PROBLEMS THAT'S EASIEST TO DEAL WITH UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES? IF WE START LOOKING AT PROS AND CONS, WHAT ARE THE PROS TO THE EIGHT PERIOD? LOTS OF FLEXIBILITY FOR PROGRAMS AND MULTIPLE ACTIVITIES.
WE'VE ALREADY TALKED ABOUT THAT.
AGAIN, THIS IS A COMPARISON AGAINST THE SEVEN PERIOD DAY FOR RIGHT NOW.
THE SEPARATION SLIDE, WE USUALLY CALL THAT THE SUMMER SLIDE.
HOW MUCH EDUCATION DOES A STUDENT WILL LOSE OVER THE SUMMER FROM SEVENTH GRADE MATH TO EIGHTH GRADE MATH, HOW DETRIMENTAL IS SUMMER? I REALIZE IN THIS CASE, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF ONE FALL ALL THE WAY TO ANOTHER SPRING.
INSTEAD OF CALLING IT SUMMER I'LL JUST CALL IT THE SEPARATION SLIDE.
THAT IS A PRO FOR THE EIGHT PERIOD DAY.
THE IDEA THAT WE'RE MEETING EVERY DAY CUTS DOWN ON THAT SEPARATION THOUGHT.
THE CONS HERE ARE OBVIOUSLY MULTIPLE CLASSES TO MANAGE.
THERE'S LOTS OF HOMEWORK IN AN EIGHT PERIOD DAY.
MULTIPLE CLASS CHANGES, INSTRUCTIONAL TIME.
YOU HAVE A HARD TIME VARYING YOUR ACTIVITIES AND THAT FAST 50-MINUTE CLASS AND THEN STAMP.
BUT TEACHERS AND KIDS BOTH AT EIGHT PERIOD DAY JUST BECOMES TOUGH FROM A STAMINA STANDPOINT.
WHEN YOU SWITCH THAT TO SAY THE TRADITIONAL BLOCK, YOU START TO CHANGE THE PROS AND CONS.
THE FLEXIBILITY IS STILL THERE.
THE PROGRAMS AND THE MULTIPLE ACTIVITIES ARE STILL THERE.
THE SEPARATION SLIDE ON A TRADITIONAL AV IS THE SAME AS THE EIGHTH BECAUSE YOU'RE STILL DOING IT EVERY OTHER DAY.
THERE'S STILL NOT THIS IDEA OF THE SEPARATION.
HOMEWORK SPREADS OUT A LITTLE BIT.
NOW I'M DOING FOUR CLASSES, A HOMEWORK A DAY INSTEAD OF EIGHT, SO HOMEWORK GOES FROM A CON TO A LITTLE BIT OF A PRO.
THERE'S NO DOUBT THINGS THAT HAPPENED IN THE HALL WHEN YOU'RE DOING A FOUR PERIOD DAY.
IF YOU HAVE LESS CLASS CHANGES,
[01:05:01]
YOU CAN IMPROVE BEHAVIOR JUST A LITTLE BIT.IN A 90 MINUTE, YOU'RE ABLE TO DO A LAB, YOU'RE ABLE TO TEACH A LITTLE PRACTICE A LITTLE, YOU'RE ABLE TO VARY YOUR ACTIVITIES IN A WAY THAT CREATE A LOT MORE OPTIMAL INSTRUCTIONAL TIME.
STAMINA IMPROVES ON THIS DEALING WITH FOUR CLASSES A DAY.
BUT THE CONS IS IT'S MULTIPLE CLASSES TO MANAGE, EVEN THOUGH IT'S LESS PER DAY, STILL IT'S EIGHT CLASSES TO MANAGE AT A TIME.
IF WE SIMPLY LOOK AT THAT TRADITIONAL BLOCK VERSUS THE ACCELERATED BLOCK, WHICH IS WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH AT THIS POINT.
THE PROS AND CONS STAY THE SAME, BUT HOW DID THEY CHANGE HERE? FLEXIBILITY IN MULTIPLE ACTIVITIES STILL THERE.
THE LAST CLASS IS TO MANAGE BECOMES EVEN BETTER BECAUSE I'M MANAGING FOUR AT A TIME INSTEAD OF EVEN EIGHT EVERY TWO DAYS, SO MUCH BETTER.
HOMEWORK SPREAD OUT, IT'S MUCH BETTER AT THIS POINT.
I HAVE HOMEWORK AT MOST IN FOUR CLASSES.
CHANCES ARE GOOD I DON'T HAVE A LOT BECAUSE WE HAVE TIME IN CLASS TO DO.
THE LAST CLASS CHANGES HERE, THE INSTRUCTIONAL STYLE IS HERE, STAMINA IMPROVES TREMENDOUSLY HERE FOR BOTH KIDS AND TEACHERS HANDLING THIS.
I WILL SAY, THIS DISCUSSION BEGAN AS A CLASS FOR TEACHERS.
HOW DO WE MAKE TEACHERS DAILY LIVES A LITTLE BIT MORE PALATABLE? THE THOUGHT THAT AN ENGLISH TEACHER IN GRADE 3 SETS THE ENGLISH PAPERS AT A TIME INSTEAD OF SEVEN OR EIGHT, WE THINK IT STARTS TO DO THAT.
THE CONS STILL BECOMES, I THINK THE ONLY CON REALLY IS THIS IDEA OF SEPARATION SLIDE.
WHAT IF ON AN ALGEBRA IN THE FALL AND MAYBE NEXT YEAR, I DON'T GET IT TO THE SPRING.
WHAT YOU HAVE TO REALIZE AND THAT'S A VERY REAL SEPARATION SLIDE IS VERY REAL.
DO I NEED TO BACK UP AND SAY SOME STUFF THERE.
>> NO, KEEP GOING. I GOT IT NOW.
>> IF YOU THINK ABOUT THOUGH, AND I'VE SHOWN YOU SO IN MATH.
ALGEBRA AND GEOMETRY ARE NOT THE SAME CLASS.
NOW IN GEOMETRY YOU USE QUITE A BIT OF ALGEBRA.
BUT THE IDEA OF I NEED THIS FOR THIS IN THE SEPARATION PART, ALGEBRA IS A PREREQUISITE REALLY TO ALGEBRA II, AND WE ALREADY SPREAD THAT OUT BY TWO YEARS.
NONE OF THE HISTORY SOCIAL STUDIES REALLY FLOW ONE INTO THE OTHER, SO THE IDEA OF SEPARATION SLIDE IS JUST VERY DIFFERENT AT A HIGH SCHOOL.
BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS ARE THREE THINGS THAT REALLY STAND ALONE.
ENGLISH, I, II, III, IV I THINK THE ARGUMENT CAN BE MADE THAT ONE RELIES ON THE NEXT.
BUT THE IDEA IS THAT WE TEND TO HAVE FOR SEPARATIONS SLIDE MUCH DIFFERENT AT A HIGH SCHOOL THAN THEY WOULD BE BETWEEN, SAY, SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE. STILL CAN'T HEAR ME?
>> THANK YOU. REALLY THIS BEING THE MAIN CON, AND I'M NOT SAYING THIS IS PERFECT, BUT AGAIN, WHICH SET OF CONS ARE THE MOST EASY TO DEAL WITH, AND WE THINK THIS BECOMES THE SITUATION.
NOW, THE NEXT FEW SLIDES ARE REALLY, THE INTENT IS TO SHOW YOU SOME OF THE MOST EXTREME EXAMPLES WE MIGHT HAVE.
THESE ARE THE CLASSES THAT KIDS NEED.
THIS FIRST EXAMPLE IS A KID THAT WANTS TO BE AN ATHLETE AND WANTS TO BE IN THE CTE CLASSES.
I WANTED TO DO IT THIS WAY SO YOU DIDN'T THINK I WAS SMOKING MIRROR AND THIS THING.
WHAT YOU WOULD NORMALLY DO SAY IN AN EIGHT PERIOD DAY, THIS IS HOW IT WOULD TRANSLATE INTO THE BLOCK WE'RE TALKING ABOUT.
BUT NOW, TO DO THIS ATHLETICS, THIS IS WHERE THIS GETS A LITTLE DIFFERENCE.
YOU HAVE TO DO WHAT'S CALLED DOUBLE BLOCKING THERE.
WHERE I MIGHT USUALLY TAKE FINE ARTS IN THAT SOMETHING BUMPS OUT.
I WON'T DO THIS EVERY TIME, BUT I JUST WANT YOU TO REALLY SEE HOW IT GOES FROM ONE TO THE OTHER.
DID OUR CTE FELLOW STAY? THANK YOU. HOW ARE YOU? IT'S MY UNDERSTANDING WE DON'T HAVE A LOT OF THE PRINCIPLES COURSES IN THE FRESHMEN.
IS THAT CORRECT? OR DO WE HAVE SOME?
>> SOME. ONE OF THE POINTS I REALLY WANT TO END UP MAKING IS JUST REALLY WHAT THE FLEXIBILITY HERE IS.
EVERY KID IS GOING TO BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT, EVERY KID IS GOING TO NEED SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT AND I THINK WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO ACCOMMODATE THAT.
THIS EXAMPLE, TAKING EVERYTHING YOU NEED,
[01:10:03]
THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW THAT WOULD LOOK.THE ONE THING THAT STICKS OUT, THIS KID MIGHT NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO FINE ARTS. WHAT CAN WE DO? WELL, IF YOU NOTICE THAT NUMBER 21 IN THE FIRST SET, THAT'S AN ELECTIVE.
IF THEY PICK A CTE STRAND THAT DOESN'T HAVE A PRINCIPLE'S COURSE THAT FINE ARTS CAN GO RIGHT IN THERE.
THE TWO SOCIAL STUDIES ARE NOT REQUIRED.
BOTH OF THEM, YOU DO ONE OR THE OTHER.
THE FINE ARTS CAN GO IN THERE.
WE'RE GOING TO START OFFERING SOME SUMMER CLASSES FOR ACCELERATION, SOME ONLINE TAUGHT CLASSES IF YOU HAD TO IN THIS CASE, DEPENDING ON THE SITUATION, FOOTBALL GUY THAT DOESN'T NECESSARILY NEED ATHLETICS SECOND SEMESTER OF HIS SENIOR YEAR.
I THINK YOU'RE FINE ARTS TEACHERS WOULD TELL YOU.
IN MY DEALINGS IN THE PAST, ART TEACHERS LOVE WHEN KIDS GET AN ART AND LIKE ART.
WHEN WE SAY TO THE WHOLE POPULATION, YOU HAVE TO TAKE A FINE ART.
FOR EVERY KID THAT DOESN'T REALLY WANT TO TAKE A FINE ART.
WE PUT THEM SOMEWHERE, DON'T WE? THAT TYPICALLY IS NOT THE BEST SCENARIO IN THE WORLD.
WE CAN COME UP WITH A FINE ART ONLINE OPTION THAT CAN START TO HELP FINE ART TEACHERS IN THAT WAY.
LOTS OF CHOICES, LOTS OF ABILITY.
THIS IS A STUDENT, THIS WOULD ALLOW ME TO BE AN AUTO TECH OR A DOUBLE BLOCK AT SENIOR YEAR, DOUBLE BLOCK AT JUNIOR YEAR, AND DO ATHLETICS ALL THE WAY THROUGH.
ANY CTE STRAND IN ANY ATHLETICS.
THIS IS EXAMPLE 1, WORST-CASE SCENARIO.
ONE THING BUMPS OUT SOMEWHERE AND WE FIND OUT A WAY TO TAKE UP FOR THAT, TO GET THAT IN SOMEWHERE.
[NOISE] IF THERE IS A ONE CLASS DISADVANTAGE, KEEP IN MIND, EVERY KID THAT STARTS THIS NEXT YEAR, THAT'S A SOPHOMORE.
THEY DIDN'T LOSE A CLASS THEIR FRESHMAN YEAR.
EVERY CLASS PERSON THAT DOES THIS THEIR JUNIOR YEAR, THEY HAVE TWO PLACES WHERE THIS DIDN'T GET THEM, THEIR FRESHMAN YEAR OR THEIR SOPHOMORE YEAR.
FOR THOSE KIDS, THERE'S A REMEDY TO BE ABLE TO PICK THOSE UP.
[LAUGHTER] BUT COMING IN, WE'RE GOING TO NEED TO DO SOME THINGS.
WE'RE GOING TO START OFFERING SOME THINGS AT MIDDLE-SCHOOL THAT WE DON'T DO NOW.
AGAIN, SOME OF THESE OTHER CHOICES FOR ONLINE AND WHAT HAVE YOU.
THE NEXT EXAMPLE, WHAT ABOUT A KID THAT WANTS TO BE IN BAND OR A CHOIR? IT'S THE SAME SCENARIO.
JUST IT'S NOT SPORTS IN THIS CASE.
IT'S BANDS. THE FINE ART GOES ALL THE WAY ACROSS.
WELL, IF YOU'LL NOTICE THE PE ATHLETIC GETS KICKED OUT.
WELL YOU GET PE ATHLETIC CREDIT WHEN YOU'RE IN AT LEAST BAND.
IS THAT THE ONLY ONE? YOU DON'T GET PE CREDIT IN CHOIR.
>> DANCE AND BAND. THERE'S LOTS OF THE FINE ARTS THAT YOU WOULDN'T NEED THE PE ATHLETIC CREDIT FOR.
ANY CTE STRAND YOU'RE IN, THIS WORKS.
I'M A FINE ART STUDENT, THIS WORKS.
WHAT ABOUT WHEN I WANT TO BE, NOW, YOU CAN'T DO ALL THREE.
WHAT ABOUT WHEN I WANT TO DO SAY BAND AND ATHLETICS? THAT'S THIS LAST EXAMPLE.
YOU CAN DOUBLE BLOCK THE FINE ARTS ALL THE WAY ACROSS AND THE ATHLETICS ALL THE WAY ACROSS.
HOW DO YOU REMEDY THOSE TWO THINGS? SAME AS BEFORE. I MAY NOT NEED ONE OF THOSE SOCIAL STUDIES.
WE JUST DON'T NEED IT AND IT FILLS IN THERE OR I CAN DO A SUMMER SCHOOL TYPE THING.
AGAIN, WE'RE HOPING TO OFFER THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL EVENTUALLY.
THAT WOULD TAKE CARE OF THOSE TWO AND THE TWO COME IN THERE.
THIS IS WHERE THE TOUGHEST BUMPY IS, BUT WE HAVE A LOT OF THINGS WE CAN DO TEMPORARILY UNTIL WE CAN GET SOME THINGS RUNNING AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND WE'RE VERY WILLING TO WORK WITH SOMEBODY.
EVERY SINGLE STUDENT'S SITUATION IS GOING TO BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT.
THERE'S SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS WE CAN WORK ON THAT BETWEEN WHAT WE OFFER.
BUT THIS IS THE WORST-CASE SCENARIO RIGHT HERE, AND IT'S VERY WORKABLE.
I THINK THE LAST THING I WOULD SAY FOR A TEACHER IN AN EIGHT PERIOD DAY, FOUR ALGEBRA ONES AND TWO GEOMETRIES.
NOW, I'M ACCUSTOMED TO TEACHERS TEACHING SIX OF EIGHT, AND THEY HAVE A CONFERENCE TIME AND A TEAM TIME.
HERE, TEACHERS TEACH SEVEN OF EIGHT.
THAT'S TOUGH. WHEN YOU GO TO BLOCK, THAT'S ONE OF THE ADVANTAGES AS IT DICTATES SIX OF EIGHT.
FOR TEACHERS AGAIN, TO TEACH GEOMETRY, ALGEBRA, AND HAVE A 90 MINUTE CONFERENCE EVERY DAY.
THIS IS A BIG HOME RUN FOR TEACHERS.
[01:15:02]
THAT'S WHERE THIS REALLY ORIGINATED.IS IT A DETRIMENT TO KIDS? NOT AT ALL.
THE BLOCK SCHEDULE THAT WE'RE IN NOW HAS THE SAME AMOUNT OF DETRIMENTS THAT ANY OTHER ONE HAS.
IT'S JUST A MATTER OF WHAT CONS EXIST AND HOW DO WE REMEDY THOSE CONS.
WE'RE IN A VERSION OF BLOCK NOW AND WE'RE CHANGING FROM ONE VERSION TO ANOTHER.
>> FIRST, I WANT TO SAY, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
I KNOW THE BOARD HAS BEEN FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS NOW, REALLY LOOKING AT POTENTIALLY BLOCK SCHEDULES FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS.
ONE IS FOR THE STUDENTS, OF COURSE, IT ACCELERATE THEIR LEARNING.
TWO, FOR THE TEACHERS TO HELP THEM OUT AND SOME OF THE SCHEDULING.
BY YOU PRESENTING THIS, THIS REALLY LAYS OUT REALLY BEAUTIFULLY HOW A BLOCK SCHEDULE CAN WORK IN OUR DISTRICT AND IMPACT IMPROVEMENTS NOT ONLY TO OUR TEACHERS, BUT IMPORTANTLY TO OUR KIDS.
I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR PRESENTING THIS INFORMATION WE'VE BEEN ASKING FOR IT FOR QUITE SOME TIME AND NOW WE HAVE SOME THINGS WE CAN MAKE SOME REALLY GREAT DECISIONS ON. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THAT.
>> MINE'S MORE OF A COMMENT AS WELL, BUT AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR THAT.
ALSO, I'M REALLY GLAD YOU HIGHLIGHTED THE DOUBLE BLOCKING FINE ARTS AND DOUBLE BLOCKING, PE, SPORTS, WHATEVER THAT MAY BE.
BECAUSE EVEN ME I WAS HAVING A DIFFICULT TIME EXPLAINING TO PEOPLE HOW THAT COULD STILL WORK.
I WAS STILL FALLING BACK TO WHERE IT JUST TAKES A LOT OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN BAND DIRECTOR AND FOOTBALL COACH.
I FOLLOWED THAT BECAUSE MY OWN KID HAD THOSE OVERLAPS THIS YEAR.
I KNOW FOR A FACT THEY COMMUNICATE TO EACH OTHER AND THEY'RE VERY ACCOMMODATING.
BUT TO SEE THAT IT CAN ACTUALLY GET BUILT INTO THE SCHEDULE AND WHAT YOU GET SQUEEZED OUT AS SOMETHING THAT WE ARE NOW OPEN TO.
WE HAVE ASKED THE QUESTION, WHY AREN'T WE DOING SUMMER SCHOOLS? WHY AREN'T WE DOING MORE SELF-PACED ONLINE STUDY TO KNOW THAT THAT'S PART OF THIS AS WELL.
I THINK SHOULD GO TO CURVE A LOT OF THAT WHICH UNTIL YOU PUT IT UP THERE, I HADN'T EVEN PHRASED IT AS NO, YOU STILL CAN.
AGAIN, THERE'S OTHER ADJUSTMENTS.
CHOIR OF COURSE, HAS A LOT OF BREAKOUT GROUPS.
THAT'S GOING TO TAKE SOME ADJUSTING.
BUT I DO HAVE ALL THE CONFIDENCE IN THE WORLD IN OUR FINE ARTS DIRECTOR TO HELP THAT GROUP.
I KNOW THE HEART'S IN THE RIGHT PLACE FOR THE CHOIR DIRECTOR, THE BAND DIRECTOR, EVERYONE, TO STILL KEEP PROVIDING OUR KIDS THE MOST OPPORTUNITIES POSSIBLE AND FOR MY DIRECT INVOLVEMENT WITH THOSE AND I HAVE DIRECT INVOLVEMENT WITH.
I KNOW THEY'LL MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO DO SO. THANK YOU FOR SHOWING THAT.
>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS, MR. LAN.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I APPRECIATE IT, SIR.
>> I DO WANT TO POINT OUT AND I APPRECIATE THIS PROCESS.
THE LAST MEETING WE WERE AT, THE YOUNG LADY CAME UP AND SPOKE AND ASKED FOR FINE ART SIGNING DAY.
THEY HAD IT TODAY. THAT WAS INCREDIBLE.
SHE WAS ASKING THAT IT BE PUT IN NEXT YEAR AND WE WERE ABLE TO TALK ABOUT IT AND THEY DID IT BEFORE SCHOOL WAS AVERAGED.
IS THAT CORRECT? IT WAS A GREAT DAY. WASN'T IT?
>> THANK YOU, MR. PHILLIPS. I APPRECIATE YOU ALL DOING THAT.
ALREADY WE'LL BE SPEAKING OF WHICH MR. PHILLIPS.
WE WILL GO INTO CONTINUING TO REPORTS OF THE SUBROUTINE AND GO INTO THE CURRICULUM AND LEARNING UPDATE, WHICH I BELIEVE YOU AND MR. ERAS ARE GOING TO DO FOR US.
YOU WANNA DO GOALS AND OBJECTIVES?
>> ARE YOU HERE? YES. GO AHEAD, SIR.
>> NO. ALL GOOD. WE'VE GOT TO PLUG IN, SO WE'RE GOOD.
SHE COMES BACK TO THAT FLEXIBILITY.
WE'RE FLEXIBLE WITH THE SCHEDULE.
[LAUGHTER] THERE'S A LOT OF DIFFERENT REPORTS I'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL OVER TIME.
I'M HOPING AT THIS TIME EACH BOARD MEETING TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT WITH YOU.
ONE OF THEM WE'LL BE LOOKING AT ARE WHAT USED TO BE CALLED OUR PERFORMANCE-BASED SYSTEM.
THEY'VE CHANGED THE NAME OF IT.
I'M LOOKING AT THE LAST THREE YEARS.
THIS IS LAST YEAR, THE YEAR BEFORE, AND THE YEAR BEFORE.
WHAT THIS ALLOWS US TO DO, FOR EXAMPLE, STUDENT COUNT, 8,047, 8,090, 8,245, YOU CAN SEE THAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE GROWN OVER TIME.
I DON'T THINK WE'RE WHERE WE WANTED TO BE DEMOGRAPHY-WISE, BUT WE'VE GROWN.
HAVE OUR DEMOGRAPHICS CHANGED? NOT REALLY.
YOU SEE ACROSS THERE AND SEE THOSE PERCENTAGES, IT'S A WAY TO KEEP UP WITH THAT.
HAS OUR DYSLEXIA NUMBERS GROWN? LOOK AT DYSLEXIA, NUMBER 14 ACROSS THERE.
[01:20:02]
HOW ARE WE DOING THERE? WE'VE GONE FROM 2%, 4% TO 5%.SLOWLY, BUT SURELY THAT NUMBER IS GROWING.
WE HAVE GOT TO KNOW WHY. AT RISK, 48, 43, 52, SO, YEAH, THAT'S GROWING A LITTLE BIT.
CTE POPULATION? FOR SOME REASON THEY DIDN'T TRACK IT THAT ONE YEAR.
BUT 80% OF OUR KIDS ARE GOING TO CTE. THAT'S PRETTY GOOD.
THAT STAYED PRETTY CONSISTENT.
WE CAN HAVE A DISCUSSION ON, IS THAT A GOOD THING OR BAD THING? TOTAL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES, 875, 919-964.
AS WE SEE THOSE THINGS GROW, IF WE START TO ASK FOR MORE, SAY, SPECIAL ED TEACHERS AND THAT KIND OF THING, YOU WOULD KNOW WHY WE WOULD BE ASKING FOR THAT.
HOW MUCH STAFF DO WE HAVE FOR THOSE THINGS? WE CAN WATCH THAT.
I'LL SHOW YOU THAT IN A MINUTE. ONE THING I WATCHED QUITE A BIT, NUMBER OF STUDENTS PER TEACHER, 17, 16, 16 COMPARED TO THE STATE AVERAGE OF 15, 14, 14.
WE'RE A LITTLE ABOVE THE STATE AVERAGE, BUT 16 IS NOT BAD.
IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GET INTO A POINT WHERE YOU HAVE 20, 20, 2 TEACHERS PER STUDENT.
THAT NUMBER, THE REASON THAT'S BLUE IS IT'S THE DIVISION OF THESE TWO BLUE THINGS ABOVE, YOUR NUMBER OF KIDS AND YOUR NUMBER OF TEACHERS.
THAT'S SOMETHING WE WOULD TRACK AND LOOK AT EACH YEAR AROUND DECEMBER TOGETHER.
IT HELPS US MAKE GOOD DECISIONS.
>> MR. LIM. ON THOSE NUMBERS, I KNOW ONE OF THE THINGS WE HAD TALKED ABOUT WAS POTENTIAL TO BRING THE NUMBERS DOWN JUST A LITTLE BIT.
>> THE POTENTIAL TO BRING THE NUMBERS DOWN JUST A LITTLE BIT.
>> THAT WOULD BE FOCUSING MORE ON CORE CLASSES OR MORE FTE FOR THE CORE CLASSES TO BRING THE CLASS SIZES DOWN, WHICH WOULD EASE SOME OF THE PRESSURE ON SOME OF THE TEACHERS, AS WELL AS HELP THE STUDENTS IN THEIR DEVELOPMENT IN EDUCATION.
I KNOW IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'VE BEEN DISCUSSING, SO WOULD LOVE TO HEAR YOUR THOUGHTS ON WHAT DO WE DO TO BRING THE EDUCATION FIDELITY BACK UP FOR STUDENTS, AND THEN GIVE SOME RELIEF TO SOME OF OUR EDUCATORS.
>> PERFECT. YOU'VE ASKED THAT BEFORE.
I LIKE THIS TO BE THE CONVERSATION STARTER TO LAUNCH INTO A MORE SPECIFIC LOOK AT JUST WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT.
I LIKE THAT. TEACHER TURNOVER RATE, THIS IS A BIG ONE, 22.8, 15 TWO YEARS AGO, AND 22 AGAIN.
SOMETHING WE REALLY WANT TO WATCH.
THE STATE AVERAGE IS 16, 14, 17.
SO OUR TURNOVER RATE IS A LITTLE BIT HIGHER THAN THE STATE AVERAGE. WE WANT TO WORK ON IT.
WE'D LIKE TO GET THAT NUMBER DOWN, WE'D LIKE TO SEE SOME STRATEGIES AND THINGS TO LOOK AT THAT NUMBER AND WORK ON IT.
STUDENT ENROLLMENT BY PROGRAM, TEACHERS BY PROGRAM.
ANOTHER THING WE CAN JUST LOOK AT AND SEE, IS SPECIAL ED GROWING LIKE WE'RE TOLD IN 719, 805, 847, CTE, ABOUT 1,700 KIDS TO 2,000.
THAT'S JUST THE NINE THROUGH 12.
BILINGUAL. IS BILINGUAL CHANGING MUCH? IT IS.
JUST GOOD STUFF FOR US TO LOOK AT THAT GENERATES CONVERSATION ABOUT WHERE WE WANT TO GO.
JUST A SMALL EXAMPLE OF SOME DATA I'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU OVER TIME.
I THANK YOU FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY. ANY QUESTIONS?
>> ANY QUESTIONS FROM ANY BOARD MEMBERS?
>> THIS IS WONDERFUL. THIS IS WHAT WE NEEDED.
>> NOW MR. FELICE AND MR. ARIS CAN COME DOWN FOR THE CURRICULUM AND LEARNING UPDATE.
>> I WANT TO GO OVER THIS EVENING WITH YOU WHERE WE STAND WITH FINE ARTS IN OUR DISTRICT, WHAT OUR ENROLLMENT NUMBERS LOOK LIKE, THE DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES WE'RE OFFERING AT THIS TIME TO SHOW YOU WHERE WE ARE AND TALK ABOUT SOME OF THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS THIS YEAR.
LET'S SEE. IT'LL BE UP ON YOUR SCREEN HERE IN JUST A SECOND.
I'LL GO AHEAD AND START WITH, WE OFFER SIX DISCIPLINES HERE IN LITTLE ELM ISD.
BAND, CHOIR, DANCE, ELEMENTARY MUSIC, THEATER, AND VISUAL ARTS.
[01:25:02]
24/25 WE'LL BE OFFERING A SEVENTH DISCIPLINE OF ORCHESTRA.I'M EXCITED ABOUT STARTING THAT IN 24/25.
JUST TO LET YOU KNOW, NATIONWIDE, THE NUMBER OF FINE ARTS DISCIPLINES TAUGHT IN THE AVERAGE PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT IS ONLY FOUR.
SO WE'RE VERY FORTUNATE IN TEXAS, THERE'S A LARGE FOCUS ON FINE ARTS.
IN LITTLE ELM WE HAVE A GREAT FOCUS ON FINE ARTS.
THANK YOU. LET'S GO THROUGH THIS QUICKLY.
THERE WE GO. JUST SHOWING YOU THE DISCIPLINES THAT WE OFFER. IS THIS WORKING?
>> WE'LL BE OFFERING SEVEN AS SOON AS WE GET TO THAT 24/25 SCHOOL YEAR.
THE NEXT SLIDE BASICALLY SHOWS YOU WHAT OUR CURRENT ENROLLMENT LOOKS LIKE.
WE'RE VERY FORTUNATE THAT AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, EVERY STUDENT ELEMENTARY, OF COURSE, TAKES ART AND MUSIC.
SO WE HAVE 100% OF OUR STUDENTS GOING THROUGH ART AND MUSIC.
MIDDLE SCHOOL RIGHT NOW, WE'RE AT 79.8, SO BASICALLY 80% OF OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE ENROLLED IN AT LEAST ONE FINE ART.
AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, CLOSE TO 59% OF OUR STUDENTS TAKE AT LEAST ONE FINE ART.
THIS DOES NOT ACCOUNT FOR THOSE STUDENTS WHO TAKE MULTIPLE FINE ARTS DURING THEIR TIME IN HIGH SCHOOL.
BEGINNING IN THE 2023/24 SCHOOL YEAR, A LITTLE NOTE THAT WE PUT DOWN THERE IS THAT ALL OF OUR SECONDARY LEVEL OF FINE ARTS COURSES WILL BE ABILITY BASED GROUPING.
WE'VE BEEN DOING THAT FOR YEARS WITH BAND, BUT NOW MORE SO WITH CHOIR, WITH THEATER.
WE'RE STARTING IN PRODUCTIONS THEATER CLASS NEXT YEAR.
SO WE'RE TRYING TO GIVE STUDENTS MORE PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES.
WE'RE REALLY TRYING TO MAKE SURE THAT THE STUDENTS ARE IN THE CORRECT BAND, THE CORRECT CHOIR, THE CORRECT THEATER CLASS BASED ON THEIR ABILITY AND WHERE THEY NEED TO BE AT THAT TIME IN THEIR LEARNING PROCESS.
THE NEXT SLIDE BASICALLY SHOWS YOU THAT OUR BUDGETS, OF COURSE, FOR FINE ARTS HAS ALWAYS COME THIS YEAR AND ALL PREVIOUS YEARS FROM OUR CAMPUS ALLOTMENT.
THE CAMPUS ALLOTMENT FROM THE PRINCIPLES THIS YEAR WAS $414,178, CURRICULUM AND LEARNING ADDED ADDITIONAL 76,000, SO YOU CAN SEE OUR TOTAL BUDGET WAS FOR 490,178.
YOU CAN SEE WE HAVE 13 TEACHERS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
OF COURSE, WE'RE LOOKING ALREADY AT THAT ACCELERATED BLOCK SCHEDULE AND THE POSSIBILITY OF ADDING TWO MORE ART TEACHERS TO ACCOMMODATE FOR THE NUMBERS OF STUDENTS IN ART.
THIS YEAR ALONE, WE HAD OVER 850 STUDENTS IN ART, OF WHICH OVER 500 OF THEM WERE IN ART 1. WHAT'S THAT? YEAH. NEXT YEAR ONE OF THE GREAT THINGS IS THIS YEAR THAT WE ARE GOING THROUGH TEA, GETTING DR. TRIMBLE SUPPORT.
WE WERE ABLE TO GO BACK AND FORTH WITH TEA AND WE ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO GIVE OUR ADVANCED ART STUDENTS IN 8TH GRADE THIS YEAR ART 1 FOR HIGH SCHOOL SO THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE MORE STUDENTS GOING INTO ART 2 THEIR FRESHMEN YEAR IN THOSE ADVANCED ARTS.
WE HAVE ONE PAIR OF PROFESSIONAL AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, WHICH WAS MS. ZADIE.
YOU MET EARLIER, OUR COLOR GUARD DIRECTOR.
WE HAVE SEVEN TEACHERS AT BOTH WALKER AND STRIKE THAT ARE FINE ARTS TEACHERS AND 14 ELEMENTARY TEACHERS BECAUSE, OF COURSE, WE HAVE TWO MUSIC AND TWO ART AT OAK POINT BECAUSE OF THE NUMBERS OF KIDS ON THAT CAMPUS, AND THEN, OF COURSE, MY POSITION.
SOME OF OUR GOALS FOR THIS YEAR.
MY GOAL IS WORKING WITH OUR FINE ARTS TEACHERS.
WE WANTED TO INCREASE THE NUMBERS OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS AND WE DID THAT.
WE WERE ABLE TO ADD ADDITIONAL COURSES THIS YEAR.
WE'RE LOOKING AT ADDING ADDITIONAL COURSES NEXT YEAR, SUCH AS THAT THEATER CLASS I TOLD YOU ABOUT, PRODUCTION THEATER.
THIS YEAR WE ADDED JAZZ ENSEMBLE AND WHAT WE CALL THE HEART AND SOUL INSTRUMENTAL VOCAL ENSEMBLE.
AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL WAS ADDED AS A CLASS, INSTEAD OF JUST BEING AN AFTER-SCHOOL EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITY.
WE REALLY WANTED TO LOOK AT A STRATEGIC PLAN FOR DEVELOPING ALL OF OUR PROGRAMS USING WHAT YOU SEE UP ON THE SCREEN THERE.
REALLY, WE WANTED TO BE HONEST AND EVALUATE WHICH PROGRAMS ARE EXCELLING, WHICH PROGRAMS ARE DOING A PRETTY GOOD JOB, AND WHICH PROGRAMS DO WE REALLY NEED TO FOCUS AND BUILD UP TO THAT NEXT LEVEL.
BECAUSE I THINK WE HAVE SOME GREAT TEACHERS AND SOME GREAT PROGRAMS NOW, BUT THE LEVEL WHERE WE WANT TO BE, WE'RE NOT WHERE WE WANT TO BE YET.
SO WE'RE ALWAYS THINKING ABOUT WHAT'S THAT NEXT STEP. WE'RE LOOKING AT EVERYTHING.
IS IT A FACILITY ISSUE, IS IT A BUDGET ISSUE, IS IT JUST TEACHING, GETTING INTO THE CURRICULUM AND KNOWING WHAT WE NEED TO BE DOING WITH CURRICULAR SUPPORT.
WE'VE BEEN LOOKING AT ALL OF THOSE THINGS THIS YEAR, FOCUSING ON PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THAT IS CONTENT-RELATED FOR OUR FINE ARTS TEACHERS.
FINE ARTS TEACHERS, FOR YEARS AND YEARS, WE SAT THROUGH ALL OF THE THINGS OFFERED AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL, BUT THERE REALLY WAS NOT FOR YEARS AND YEARS CONTENT-SPECIFIC PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT.
[01:30:02]
GETTING OUR CHOIR DIRECTORS TO GET TO WORK WITH PROFESSIONAL OTHER CHOIR DIRECTORS AND GET THAT ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTION AND HEY, HAVE YOU TRIED THIS WITH YOUR KIDS? ARE OUR ART TEACHERS GETTING ADDITIONAL SUPPORT? WE DID A LOT OF THAT THIS YEAR.I'M VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT AND WE'VE INCREASED OUR FUNDING FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WITH OUR FINE ARTS TEACHERS AND I'M JUST REALLY EXCITED ABOUT WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT YEAR.
WE'RE LOOKING AT CREATING, OF COURSE, THAT 10-YEAR PLAN FOR OUR UNIFORMS, AND THAT'S FOR HIGH-SCHOOL, DIFFERENT FINE ARTS, AS WELL AS MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND, OF COURSE, CREATING THAT PLAN FOR IMPLEMENTING ORCHESTRA FOR THE 24/25 SCHOOL YEAR.
SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES THAT I'M REALLY PROUD OF THIS YEAR.
WE WERE RECOGNIZED FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR AS A BEST COMMUNITIES FOR MUSIC EDUCATION BY THE NAMM FOUNDATION.
I WAS ESPECIALLY PROUD OF THAT.
THAT'S OUR BAND DIRECTORS, CHOIR DIRECTORS, AND MUSIC TEACHERS.
WE ARE SUBMITTING IN JUNE A PORTFOLIO TO TAKE TAEA, WHICH IS TEXAS ARTS EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION, TO BECOME HOPEFULLY A TAEA DISTRICT OF DISTINCTION FOR ART.
OUR ART TEACHERS ARE KILLING IT, THEY'RE DOING A GREAT JOB, WE'VE JUST NEVER APPLIED FOR THIS BEFORE.
THERE WERE SOME THINGS WE HAD TO DO.
WE HAD TO MAKE SURE ALL OF OUR TEACHERS WERE MEMBERS OF THEIR PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS, WE HAD TO MAKE SURE ALL OF OUR TEACHERS WERE SUBMITTING KIDS TO GO TO JUNIOR VASE AND VASE.
WE'VE DONE A LOT OF THINGS DIFFERENT THIS YEAR THAN WE'VE DONE BEFORE.
MIDDLE-SCHOOL ART STUDENTS THIS YEAR, COMPETING AT JUNIOR VASE.
THAT'S A FIRST TIME IN SCHOOL DISTRICT HISTORY.
WE'VE NEVER HAD MIDDLE-SCHOOL STUDENTS GOING TO JUNIOR VASE AND WE SENT THEM FROM WALKER AND STRIKE THIS YEAR AND THEY DID A GREAT JOB.
WE ALSO HAD MIDDLE-SCHOOL STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN ONE-ACT PLAY.
WE'VE NEVER DONE THAT BEFORE EITHER, AND BOTH WALKER AND STRIKE DID ONE ACT PLAY THIS YEAR.
WE'RE JUST INCREASING WHAT THE STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES ARE AT A YOUNGER LEVEL SO THAT WE'RE JUST DEVELOPING THOSE KIDS TO BE EVEN MORE COMPETITIVE AND GO FURTHER AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL.
WE DID ADD A COUPLE OF COURSES AT THE HIGH SCHOOL THIS YEAR.
TODAY, OF COURSE, LIKE MR. LAMB ALREADY SAID WE HAD OUR FIRST EVER FINE ART SIGNING DAY, WE RECOGNIZED 14 STUDENTS, 13 THAT CAN BE PRESENT.
THANK YOU, MR. BEBER, FOR BEING AT THAT TODAY, I APPRECIATE THAT.
WE REALLY HAD A LOT OF FUN CELEBRATING THOSE STUDENTS TODAY.
THE SUPPORT THAT THE OTHER STUDENTS ON THE CAMPUS GAVE TO THOSE STUDENTS AND THE PARENTAL SUPPORT THERE TODAY, IT WAS JUST AWESOME.
I WAS REALLY HAPPY TO SEE THAT START THIS YEAR.
I APPRECIATE ALL THE SUPPORT I RECEIVED TOO AND MAKING SURE THAT WE COULD DO THAT THIS YEAR AND NOT WAIT.
WE ONLY HAD A COUPLE OF WEEKS BUT WE MADE IT HAPPEN.
NOW, SOME OF THE PERFORMANCE DATA.
I'M NOT GOING TO READ THROUGH THIS.
THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS UP THERE, BUT JUST TO HIGHLIGHT A FEW OF THE THINGS.
AGAIN, STUDENTS AT VASE COMPETITION AND JUNIOR VASE DOING A GREAT JOB.
TWO STUDENTS BEING CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION WINNERS.
WE HAD A MIDDLE-SCHOOL STUDENTS ADVANCE TO GET ART 1 CREDIT AT THE END OF THIS YEAR, SO THEY GET A START IN A HIGHER-LEVEL ART AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
FOR BAND, OUR STUDENTS ARE DOING A GREAT JOB.
MRS. STURCH AND THE BAND STAFF ARE DOING A GREAT JOB.
ONCE, AGAIN, STRAIGHT SWEEPSTAKES AT UIL MARCHING CONTEST, THEY ADVANCED TO AREA.
AGAIN, WE'VE ADVANCED THE AREA EVERY TIME POSSIBLE SINCE 2004, JUST DOING A GREAT JOB.
YOU CAN SEE MULTIPLE KIDS IN ALL-REGION BANDS, ALL-REGION ORCHESTRAS.
THEY DO TAKE WIND PLAYERS, BY THE WAY, AND THEY PUT THEM IN THE ALL-REGION ORCHESTRA IF THEY'RE ONE OF THE TOP WIND PLAYERS IN THE REGION, THAT'S WHY WE HAVE THAT ALL-REGION ORCHESTRA THERE.
THEY'LL TAKE OBOE, PERCUSSION, AND SO ON.
NUMEROUS KIDS GOING TO SOLO AND ENSEMBLE, DOING GREAT THINGS, YOU CAN SEE UP THERE.
OUR WINTER GUARD, WHICH I TALKED ABOUT EARLIER, RANKED NUMBER 3 IN THE STATE AND OPEN CLASS.
THEY'RE PERFORMING AT A VERY HIGH LEVEL.
MS. ADAMS AND MS. LEWIS ARE JUST DOING A KILLER JOB.
THEIR STUDENTS ARE GOING TO GET THREE GROUPS GO TO UIL THIS YEAR OUT OF FIVE, THEY GOT SWEEPSTAKES.
OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL, WALKER MIDDLE SCHOOL VARSITY CHOIR DID AN AMAZING JOB.
WE'VE GOT LOTS OF KIDS MAKING ALL-REGION CHOIR.
YOU GUYS KNOW ABOUT JULIA WILSON MADE ALL-STATE CHOIR.
WE HAD OUR FIRST-EVER MIDDLE-SCHOOL ALL-STATE CHOIR MEMBER FROM STRIKE MIDDLE SCHOOL, ELENA SERRATO.
OUR DANCE TEAM, WE TALKED ABOUT EARLIER.
IT'S INTERESTING BECAUSE, IN DANCE, I WISH THERE WAS A UIL-LEVEL COMPETITION.
THERE JUST HAS NEVER BEEN THAT THING STARTED IN THE STATE OF TEXAS, SO THEY HAVE TO CHOOSE WHICH CIRCUIT TO COMPETE ON, AND THEY DID AN AMAZING JOB THIS YEAR.
OUR THEATER PROGRAMS ARE STARTING TO TAKE OFF NOW WITH THAT ADDITION OF THE ONE-ACT PLAY AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL AND HAVING THE PRODUCTION THEATER CLASS NEXT YEAR, WE'RE JUST TRYING TO GET THOSE KIDS TO GET MULTIPLE PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES.
THOSE KIDS WHO REALLY WANT TO DO PLAYS AND DO PRODUCTIONS, WE ARE TRYING TO GIVE THEM MORE OPPORTUNITY TO DO THAT.
WE HAD LOTS OF INDIVIDUAL STUDENT AWARD WINNERS AT ONE-ACT PLAY FOR BOTH MIDDLE SCHOOLS, AND THAT WAS VERY EXCITING.
WITH OUR ELEMENTARY PROGRAMS, WE'RE CONTINUING TO DO EVERY YEAR THE DISTRICT ART SHOW, WHICH WE HOSTED HERE AT THIS BUILDING THIS YEAR, WHICH WAS JUST GREAT.
[01:35:02]
I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW MANY PHONE CALLS I GOT, BY THE WAY, AND EMAILS FROM PARENTS SAYING, MAN, WHAT A GREAT VENUE FOR THE ART SHOW THIS YEAR.I WAS VERY EXCITED THAT WE COULD DO THAT IN THIS BUILDING AND IN OUR PL2 ROOM THIS YEAR.
OF COURSE, WE CONTINUED OUR TRADITION WITH OUR ELEMENTARY HONOR CHOIR, IT WAS ELEMENTARY STUDENTS FROM EACH OF OUR SIX ELEMENTARIES CAME TOGETHER TO PERFORM WITH THE HONOR CHOIR.
JUST LIKE ALL PROGRAMS, OF COURSE, WE CAN BENEFIT FROM HAVING ADDITIONAL PERSONNEL WITH OUR PROGRAMS AS WE CONTINUE TO GROW, AS THE DISTRICT CONTINUES TO GROW.
I WOULD SAY FOR THE FUTURE, I KNOW WE HAVE A LOT OF THINGS ADDRESSED FOR FINE ARTS IN THE CURRENT BOND THAT WAS PASSED, AND THERE'S ADDITIONAL SPACES FOR FINE ARTS THAT ARE BEING BUILT ON, WHICH IS GOING TO BE GREAT.
I WOULD JUST THROW OUT THE IDEA THAT IN THE FUTURE, WE SHOULD CONSIDER LOOKING AT A PERFORMING ARTS CENTER.
I KNOW THE FINE ARTS DIRECTOR IS GOING TO SAY THAT.
I KNOW THAT'S AN EXPENSIVE THING, BUT ALL AROUND US, WE SEE IN COPPELL, WE SEE IN FRISCO, WE SEE IN PLANO, ARLINGTON, EVERYWHERE YOU LOOK, EVEN SMALLER DISTRICTS LIKE MELISSA, THEY'RE BUILDING THESE BEAUTIFUL PERFORMING ARTS CENTER.
REMEMBER, OUR ONLY VENUE FOR DOING THAT IN LITTLE ELM IS LITTLE ELM HIGH SCHOOL, AND THAT'S AUDITORIUM IS 20 YEARS OLD.
WE STILL HAVE ALL INCANDESCENT LIGHTING.
EVERYTHING DONE EVEN AT THE UIL ONE-ACT PLAY LEVEL IS DONE WITH LED.
OUR KIDS HAVE TO LEARN TO PROGRAM SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, EVEN WHEN THEY GO TO COMPETITION.
OUR STAGE AT LITTLE ELM HIGH SCHOOL IS 20-FEET MORE NARROW, I GUESS, THAN ANY HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM AROUND US, 20 FEET.
THE PROSCENIUM IS VERY NARROW, SO WHEN OUR KIDS GO TO UIL ONE-ACT PLAY, THEY HAVE TO MEMORIZE WHERE THEY'RE GOING TO PUT THINGS TO SET UP.
BUT WE CAN'T DO THAT ON OUR OWN STAGE WHEN WE PRACTICE. IT'S VERY INTERESTING.
I WOULD SAY IF THAT'S SOMETHING WE CONSIDER IN THE FUTURE, GIVING OUR TOWN AND OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT A VENUE THAT WOULD BE TOP-NOTCH FOR OUR PERFORMING ARTS STUDENTS AND OUR VISUAL ARTS STUDENTS.
>> HOW MANY DOES IT SEAT DOWN? IS IT 300 OR 400?
>> I THINK OUR CURRENT AUDITORIUM SEATS AROUND 600, 650, I BELIEVE.
>> OKAY. JUST CURIOUS. I WASN'T SURE.
>> I THINK IT'S ABOUT 600 OR 650 [OVERLAPPING]
>> WHAT IS THE STAGE SIZE BY NOW? YOU SAID ABOUT 20 FEET SHORTER.
>> I'M NOT SURE OF THE ACTUAL SIZE.
WHAT WE DID WAS WE NOTICED WHEN WE WERE GOING TO FRISCO, MCKINNEY, AND THESE OTHER VENUES, THAT THE WORKABLE AREA ON THE STAGE WAS MUCH WIDER.
WE ACTUALLY MEASURED THE AVERAGE STAGE AND I THINK DR. AYERS IS HERE.
DR. AYERS, WHAT IS THE AVERAGE IN THE STATE BECAUSE I KNOW BEING A THEATER SPECIALIST AS WELL.
>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? ALL RIGHT, WELL, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
>> FOR ORCHESTRA IN '23 AND '24-'25, ARE WE FACING THAT IN STARTING WITH SIXTH GRADE OR ARE WE JUST GOING FULL-ON? EVERYBODY WHO HAS AN INTEREST WILL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE.
>> I WISH WE COULD DO IT WITH EVERYONE HONESTLY, BUT I THINK THAT BECAUSE OF FACILITIES AND HAVING TO HAVE THAT REHEARSAL SPACE, DEPENDING ON THE AVAILABILITY OF THIS SPACE IN '24-'25, IF THAT'S BEEN BUILT UP AT BOTH STRIKE AND WALKER, WE'RE LOOKING AT STARTING WITH OUR SIXTH GRADE AND BUILDING IT UP FROM SIXTH GRADE.
ANYTHING ELSE? WELL, THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF FINE ARTS.
>> ALL RIGHT. GOOD EVENING, AGAIN.
TONIGHT, WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT CTE.
I'M GOING TO PICK UP WHERE MR. LAMB STOPPED FOR A SECOND BECAUSE I KNOW WHERE THE DATA WAS HIDDEN FOR CTE, WHERE HE COULDN'T FIND IT.
WHAT WE'RE REALLY LOOKING AT HERE IS, IN THAT 2021 WHERE WE WERE RIGHT ABOUT 2,300 STUDENTS IN THE CTE PROGRAM, 2,400 STUDENTS.
WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO SEE, THE BLUE LINE IN THIS GRAPH HERE IS YOU'RE GOING TO SEE THE ENROLLMENT OF THE CTE STUDENTS OVER THE COURSE OF THE YEARS.
THE YEAR OF COVID, IT WAS FLAT LINE BECAUSE WE WERE REQUIRING MOST OF OUR STUDENTS TO COME IN PERSON FOR CTE.
WHAT WE SAW WAS A DRAMATIC 37% INCREASE THAT NEXT YEAR, WHICH WAS LAST YEAR BECAUSE THE STUDENTS CAME BACK FACE-TO-FACE, OF COURSE.
[01:40:01]
NOW, THEN, IF WE CONTINUE AT THE RATE WE'RE GOING, WHAT WE'RE GOING TO SEE IS NEXT YEAR IF THE HIGH SCHOOL STILL SITTING AT ABOUT 2,400, 2,500 STUDENTS, IF EVERY STUDENT WHO REGISTERED FOR A CTE CLASS NEXT YEAR ACTUALLY GOT INTO A CTE COURSES, WE WOULD HAVE 4,007 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN CTE COURSES, WHICH IS EQUATING TO ABOUT A 13% GROWTH FROM YEAR TO YEAR.AS FAR AS OUR BUDGET GOES, TYPICALLY, THE PERKINS BUDGET I PUT UP HERE, THE PERKINS GRANT, 59,877, THAT IS AFTER OUR ALLOTMENT HAS BEEN REDUCED BY THE DISTRICT FROM THE ACTUAL AMOUNT OF IT'S LIKE 62,000.
BUT YOU HAVE THE 5% THAT HAS TO BE TAKEN OFF, AND I'M SURE MS. ADAMS COULD DETAIL A LITTLE BIT MORE.
OUR LOCAL BUDGET WAS RIGHT AROUND 375,000, WHICH IS THE 55% ALLOCATION THAT WE HAD.
WE RECEIVED TWO GRANTS WITHIN THE LAST YEAR ABOVE THE PERKINS GRANT, BOTH FROM THE RAY MARR FOUNDATION.
THE FIRST ONE WAS THE AMOUNT OF 50,000 FOR THE SCHOLARSHIPS THAT BROUGHT US SIX ADDITIONAL WELDING UNITS INTO OUR WELDING LABS.
THE SECOND WHICH WE RECEIVED THIS YEAR IN OUR EARLIER BOARD MEETING WAS 50,000, SPECIFICALLY TARGETING STUDENTS FOR SCHOLARSHIPS GOING TO A TRADE SCHOOL OR A VOCATIONAL SCHOOL OF THEIR CHOICE THEREAFTER.
AS FAR AS THE INDIVIDUAL BUDGETS, OF COURSE, EACH ONE OF OUR CTSOS, THE CAREER AND TECHNICAL STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS HAVE THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNTS, WITH THE BIGGEST ONE PROBABLY BEING OUR FOOD TRUCK, WHICH ALSO TIES INTO THE BISTRO AND THE CATERING SERVICE THAT THEY PROVIDE. ALL RIGHT.
STAFFING. CURRENTLY, WE HAVE 25 TEACHERS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, FIVE AT WALKER, FOUR AT STRIKE, THEN OF COURSE MY POSITION.
I'M GOING TO BACK UP NOW THAT I'VE GONE THROUGH THAT AND ADD THAT I ALREADY KNOW THAT FROM MY UNDERSTANDING IS WE'RE ALREADY ADDING AN ADDITIONAL BUSINESS TEACHER AT THE HIGH SCHOOL SO THAT'LL BUMP UP NEXT YEAR TO AT LEAST 26 DEPENDING UPON HOW THE MASTER SCHEDULE GOES FROM THERE, SO IT MAY INCREASE AGAIN.
I KNOW THAT THE FIVE TEACHERS AT WALKER HAVE ALREADY BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE ADMINISTRATORS THERE.
THEY'RE GOING TO REDUCE IT BACK DOWN TO FOUR.
THE REASON THEY ADDED THE FIFTH ONE LAST YEAR WAS TO COUNTER-BALANCE US MOVING THE COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS COURSE FROM THE EIGHTH GRADE TO THE SEVENTH GRADE.
THERE WAS A YEAR WHERE WE WERE HAVING BOTH SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADERS TAKE THOSE COURSES WHICH THEY NEED IN ORDER TO REGISTER BECAUSE WE ASKED OUR EIGHTH GRADERS TO REGISTER FOR THEIR ENTIRE HIGH SCHOOL CAREER THE FALL OF THEIR EIGHTH-GRADE YEAR, WHICH WE BROUGHT TO YOU ALL AND YOU SAID YES, IT MAKES SENSE.
LET'S CHANGE IT FROM EIGHTH GRADE TO SEVENTH GRADE SO THESE KIDS AND THE PARENTS ARE MAKING MORE INFORMED DECISIONS.
THAT WILL REDUCE BACK DOWN TO FOUR AND FOUR, SO WE'LL SEE A LITTLE BIT MORE OF EQUITY THERE AGAIN.
RIGHT NOW, WE'VE DONE A FEW THINGS, AND THIS IS GOING TO COMMENT AGAIN BACK TO WHAT MR. LAMB WAS TALKING ABOUT EARLIER, OUR PRINCIPLES CLASSES THIS NEXT YEAR WE'RE GOING TO BE DROPPING, AS YOU ALL ARE AWARE OF THE PRINCIPLES OF AUDIO-VIDEO AND THE FUNDAMENTALS OF COMPUTER SCIENCE DOWN TO THE EIGHTH-GRADE LEVEL AND OFFERING IT TO OUR EIGHTH-GRADE STUDENTS SO THAT THEY CAN GET HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT SHOULD THEY CHOOSE TO.
IN ADDITION, IT'S ALMOST LIKE MR. LAMB AND I KNEW EACH OTHER FOR A WHILE.
[LAUGHTER] AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR IN NEXT YEAR'S COURSE CATALOG, I HAD ALREADY GONE THROUGH AND TALKING WITH THE TEACHERS WE'VE REMOVED ALL OF THE PREREQUISITES FOR THE COURSES THAT WERE NOT STRICTLY ENFORCEABLE BY THE TIKS.
THOSE STUDENTS WOULD HAVE A BETTER OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE, SAY THEY START WELDING AS A FRESHMAN AND THEY DECIDE, WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT? WELDING IS NOT MY CUP OF TEA. WELL, GREAT.
NOW THAT WE'VE REMOVED THESE CAMPUS RESTRICTIONS, THEY CAN TAKE, JUMP IN AND IMMEDIATELY TAKE SOMETHING ELSE AND STILL BE ABLE TO FINISH A COURSE OF STUDY BEFORE THEY GRADUATE.
THAT FITS IN AND IT WORKS BEAUTIFULLY WITH THE ADVANCED BLOCK SCHEDULING.
WE ARE LOOKING TO INCREASE OUR INDUSTRY-BASED CERTIFICATION.
I BELIEVE YOU ALL SHOULD HAVE A HANDOUT SIMILAR TO THIS.
IN LIST 1 HERE, THE 16 PROGRAMS OF STUDY, AND THERE ARE 23 INDUSTRY-BASED CERTIFICATIONS WE'RE CURRENTLY OFFERING, AND I'LL GET INTO A LITTLE BIT MORE HERE IN A SECOND.
SUFFICE TO SAY THAT THE LAST ONE IS PROMOTE, INCREASE OUR STUDENT PARTICIPATION IN THE CTSOS,
[01:45:03]
WHICH ARE THE CAREER AND TECHNICAL STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS.WE HONORED FOUR OF THEM TONIGHT.
THREE OF THEM WERE PRE-EXISTING.
THE SKILLS USA FOR WELDING, WE STARTED THIS YEAR.
WE ALSO STARTED TAFE, WHICH IS TEXAS ASSOCIATION OF FUTURE EDUCATORS.
AND THEN NEXT YEAR, WE'RE LOOKING TO ADD, IN ADDITION TO THAT, A HIGH-SCHOOL CULINARY ARTS BARBECUE TEAM OR SOME OTHER TYPE OF CULINARY COMPETITION TEAM AT THAT LEVEL.
[LAUGHTER] WE'VE ALREADY GOT THE SMOKERS AND STUFF.
LET'S TRY THIS AGAIN. THIS GOES INTO THE NEXT ACTIVITIES, AND I'VE ALREADY TALKED ABOUT THIS A LITTLE BIT.
AS YOU SAW TONIGHT, FOUR OF OUR CTSOS COMPETED AT THE STATE LEVEL TO ADVANCE TO NATIONALS.
I WANT TO POINT OUT ALSO THAT WE STARTED A NEW PROGRAM HERE, THESE LAST TWO BULLETS, PROBABLY THE THINGS I'M MOST PROUD OF BECAUSE WE ADDED SCHOOL LINKS.
WHILE THAT'S JUST A PROGRAM PIECE OF SOFTWARE TO MOST PEOPLE, WHAT THIS DOES IS ALLOWS US TO SURVEY ALL OF OUR STUDENTS AND START DEVELOPING, NOT ONLY A CAREER PATH AT THAT SEVENTH-GRADE LEVEL, BUT IT ALLOWS THEM TO DEVELOP THEIR CHOICES IN LIFE THAT THEN WE START GETTING FEEDBACK ON WHAT TYPES OF COURSES WE CAN BE OFFERING AT THE HIGH SCHOOL IF WE DECIDE WE NEED TO ADD ONTO OUR DIFFERENT PROGRAMS OF STUDY.
WE HAVE VIABLE DATA AT THAT POINT TO SAY, HEY, MOST OF THE KIDS ARE WANTING TO TAKE SOMETHING, WE DON'T HAVE TO JUST SPOT AT THE MOMENT, PULL TOGETHER A SURVEY.
WE'VE ALREADY GOT A VERY WELL-DEVELOPED, LONG JAVOUT-BASED SURVEY OF WHAT THE KIDS ARE INTERESTED IN.
THE NICE THING IS, IS THIS PROGRAM ALSO FEEDS INTO THE ABILITY TO TIE IN OUR LOCAL BUSINESS COMMUNITIES WHERE THEY CAN OFFER JOBS TO OUR STUDENTS DIRECTLY.
BECAUSE I DIDN'T FIGURE THAT WAS ENOUGH, I'VE ALSO BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE CEO OF PEOPLE WORK, AND IT'S REALLY INTERESTING SPELLING OF THE NAME.
BUT WHAT THEY DO IS THEY SPECIFICALLY GO OUT, AND WHERE I'M TALKING ABOUT ADDING A COUPLE OF BUSINESSES.
THEY TARGET OUR ENTIRE COMMUNITY AND TALK TO BUSINESS OWNERS, CEOS, AND ASK THEM HOW THEY CAN BEST SUPPORT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WITH GUEST SPEAKERS, INTERNSHIPS, APPRENTICESHIPS, PRACTICUMS, EVERYTHING THAT WE WOULD WANT.
THEN IT ALSO PROVIDES THEM WITH THE ONE-ON-ONE VIRTUAL COACHING FOR THOSE SENIORS.
THE SENIORS NOT ONLY GET TO GO IN AND DO THEIR OWN, IT'S REALLY COOL.
THERE'S AN OPTION FOR THEIR CAREER INVESTIGATION THAT USES SOFTWARE FROM THE NSA OR THEY TAKE A PICTURE AND BASED ON THEIR FACIAL RECOGNITION AND WITHIN 98% ACCURACY CAN LABEL ALL THE ATTRIBUTES OF A PERSON.
IT'S INTERESTING. BUT IT TIES IN TOGETHER AND ALLOWS OUR TEACHERS, SO THIS FALL THEY'LL BE ABLE TO NOT ONLY COMBINE THE BUSINESSES BUT THEN BE ABLE TO TRACK AND LOAD THE PAPERWORK SO THAT EVERYTHING THAT WE'VE BEEN TRYING TO DO FOR SO LONG, WE'RE FINALLY GETTING INTO THE 22ND CENTURY HERE.
SOME OF THE PAPERWORK WHERE WE'VE HAD TO KEEP TRACK OF AND I'VE GOT COPIER PAPER BOXES FROM PAST YEARS WHERE IT'S JUST DUMP THE PAPER IN AND HOLD IT FOR SEVEN YEARS SORT OF THING.
NOW, WITH THIS NEW TECHNOLOGY, THE KIDS WILL BE ABLE TO FILE THE PAPERWORK, FILE IT WITH THE BUSINESS EDOC SIGN IT TO THE PARENTS, TO THE STUDENTS, TO THE MANAGERS, TO THE TEACHER, AND FILE IT ONLINE, AND IT WILL KEEP IT ALL FOR US.
IF WHEN WE EVER GET AUDITED, WE'VE GOT IT.
WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF TIME, SORRY.
[LAUGHTER] SOMETHING I KNEW THAT WAS OF INTEREST TO THE SCHOOL BOARD WAS THE CTE ENDORSEMENTS AND COMPLETER STATUS BECAUSE THAT CAME UP.
THIS IS AS OF LAST WEEK IN SOME REGARDS.
RIGHT NOW YOU'RE SEEING THE THREE PRIMARY ENDORSEMENTS THAT FEED INTO THE CTE COMPLETER STATUS.
IN OTHER WORDS, THEY WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO GET THESE ENDORSEMENTS WITHOUT ACHIEVING SOME CTE PROGRAM OF STUDY COMPLETION.
NOW, I HAVE NOT DONE THE STUDY TO SEE HOW MANY OF THESE OVERLAP, BECAUSE IN SOME CASES THE STEM OVERLAPS WITH THE BUSINESS INDUSTRY.
OUT OF THAT 240, SOME OUT THERE, THERE MAY ONLY BE 200 THAT ARE ACTUAL STUDENTS.
BUT SUFFICE TO SAY WE'RE LOOKING AT ABOUT 65, 70% OF OUR STUDENT POPULATION THAT IS COMPLETING THEIR COURSES OR AT LEAST ONE PROGRAM OF STUDY.
WHAT THAT TELLS US IS THAT A LOT OF TIMES
[01:50:01]
THE DATA THAT WE WERE SEEING FROM THE STATE WHERE WE WERE GETTING LOW COMPLETION RATES ARE STUDENTS WHO MAY HAVE STARTED ONE PROGRAM OF STUDY, BUT THEN STARTED A SECOND OR THIRD OR A FOURTH AND IT WAS COUNTING ALL FOUR OF THEM EVEN THOUGH THEY ONLY COMPLETED ONE.THAT BEING SAID, AS OF TODAY, THIS IS ACCURATE, 78% OF OUR COURSES, SO 18 OUT OF OUR 23 DIFFERENT INDUSTRY-BASED CERTIFICATIONS WERE OFFERING STUDENTS, 78 ARE REPORTING.
WE HAVE AN AVERAGE PASS RATE OF ABOUT 70%, WHICH IS NOT BAD.
IT'S NOT AMAZING, BUT IT'S NOT BAD.
WE AS OF TODAY HAVE GIVEN UP 336 INDUSTRY-BASED CERTIFICATIONS TO STUDENTS SO FAR THIS YEAR WITH MORE STILL COMING.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, PROGRAM NEEDS.
AS ALWAYS JUST LIKE MR. FELICE MENTIONED AS THE PROGRAM GROWS, WE CAN ALWAYS USE ADDITIONAL PERSONNEL.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I THINK WE NEED TO TRULY FOCUS ON IS SOMETHING WHEN I FIRST CAME HERE THREE YEARS AGO I DID AN ANALYSIS OF OUR CURRICULUM, WHERE I PERSONALLY BELIEVE THAT WHILE NOT EVERY STUDENT MAY GO TO COLLEGE, BUT EVERY STUDENT WILL HAVE A CAREER AND HIGHER EDUCATION CAN FURTHER THAT CAREER.
WHEN I STUDIED THE CURRICULUM, WHAT I FOUND WAS THAT AT THAT TIME, OUT OF THE 14 PROGRAMS OF STUDY, ONLY TWO OF THEM DID NOT REQUIRE ADDITIONAL COLLEGE AFTER GRADUATION.
SINCE THAT TIME, WE'VE ADDED ONE PROGRAM OF STUDY, THE DRONE PROGRAM OF STUDY LAST YEAR THAT WE STARTED THE FIRST COURSE THIS YEAR, WHICH DOES NOT REQUIRE A COLLEGE DEGREE MOVING FORWARD, AND WE ALTERED THE HEALTH SCIENCES SO THAT WE WERE ACTUALLY PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH THE CNA, THE CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT, SO THEY DON'T HAVE TO GO TO COLLEGE IF THEY DON'T WANT TO.
THEY CAN GO OUT AND GET A DECENT-PAYING JOB WHILE THEY GO TO COLLEGE IF THEY WANT, BUT THEY'RE NOT REQUIRED TO.
THAT'S THE PRIMARY NEEDS, AND THAT'S THE SUMMARY OF IT.
>> I HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS, BUT THE FIRST ONE I LOVE THAT WE HAVE THE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THE STUDENTS.
CAN YOU TELL US HOW DOES THAT WORK, HOW DO THEY GO ABOUT GETTING THOSE SCHOLARSHIPS, HAVE WE DISBURSED? DO WE GET THAT AMOUNT EVERY YEAR?
>> NO, MA'AM. IT WAS A ONE-TIME DONATION AND IT WAS GIVEN SPECIFICALLY TO MR. GENTRY IN THE WELDING DEPARTMENT INITIALLY, AND THEN THEY WERE DISTRIBUTING IT.
>> THANK YOU. APPLICATION PROCESS IS THE END OF THE DAY.
APPLICATION PROCESS, AND HE ONLY HAD TWO STUDENTS APPLY.
WHAT THEY DID WAS THEY ALLOCATED FOR THOSE STUDENTS AND THEN THEY DECIDED TO BASICALLY BANK THE REST OF IT SO THAT WE CAN CONTINUE GIVING IT FOR THE FUTURE YEARS.
>> SECOND QUESTION WAS, YOU UPDATED US ON THE CURRENT COMPLETION RATE, WHICH IS AT 70%, AND I THINK THE LAST TIME WE GOT TO UPDATE OUR GOAL, OF COURSE, EVENTUALLY IS TO GET TO 100%.
CAN YOU TALK ABOUT YOUR CONFIDENCE ABOUT US GETTING FROM 70-100% THERE ON THE COMPLETION RATE?
>> WHAT IS GOING TO TAKE, IN SOME CASES, CTE CAN BE A FICKLE DISCIPLINE.
SOMETIMES BECAUSE OF SO MANY OF OUR TEACHERS, WE HIRE STRAIGHT OUT OF INDUSTRY.
SOMETIMES THEY'LL COME TO WORK FOR US AND THEN DECIDE THAT TEACHING IS NOT THEIR GIG AND THEY'LL LEAVE IN MID-YEAR, AND IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO REPLACE THEM.
IN DOING SO, I DON'T KNOW THAT WE COULD EVER 100% GUARANTEE A 100% COMPLETION BUT WE COULD GET PROBABLY 99% BY HAVING THAT SUSTAINED CURRICULUM IN PLACE AND THEN A CONTINUAL INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT FOR THOSE TEACHERS.
>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? THANK YOU, DR. HARRIS. APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH, SIR.
>> WE WILL GO ON TO THE LAST ITEM FOR THE REPORTS OF THE SUPERINTENDENT, THE FOURTH QUARTER DEMOGRAPHICS REPORT FOR MR. GASIUS.
>> GOOD EVENING. THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY, PRESIDENT OLSON, SUPERINTENDENT LAMB, TO GIVE THE DEMOGRAPHIC REPORT FOR THE FOURTH QUARTER.
YOU'LL SEE AS WE GO THROUGH THESE NUMBERS, IF YOU REMEMBER, MR. TEMPLETON WAS HERE A FEW MONTHS AGO TALKING ABOUT THE THIRD QUARTER NUMBERS.
THEY HAVEN'T CHANGED A WHOLE LOT.
WE'LL TRY TO GO THROUGH THEM PRETTY QUICKLY.
I KNOW SOME OF IT IS PRETTY DRY.
THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE, WHAT YOU TAKE FROM THIS SLIDE IS THAT DENTON COUNTY CONTINUES TO GO UNDER THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE OF THE US,
[01:55:01]
TEXAS, AND THE DFW RATE, SO OUR PEOPLE HERE TEND TO BE STILL EMPLOYED.OUR UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IS REALLY LOW AT THE CURRENT TIME AT 2.9 THIS YEAR.
NEW HOME STARTS AND CLOSING, BUT THE IMPORTANT THING TAKING FROM THIS, AS WE'VE KNOWN OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF QUARTERS, THE HOUSING STARTS HAVE STARTED TO DECLINE BECAUSE OF THE EXCESS INVENTORY THAT WAS OUT THERE FOR THE REALTORS AND THE BUILDERS.
BUT NOW THAT HAS STARTED TO CHANGE.
OUR CLOSINGS HAVE STARTED TO CLIMB AND HAS NOW BEGUN TO OUTPACE OUR STARTS.
WE'RE STARTING TO EAT INTO THAT INVENTORY A LITTLE BIT.
THE LIGHT BLUE LINE IS OUR CLOSINGS.
THE PURPLE LINE IS THE HOUSING STARTS.
AS YOU CAN SEE NOW WE OUTPACE THEM BY 847 HOMES.
AGAIN, THIS IS IN THE DFW AREA.
THIS IS NOT JUST INDICATIVE OF LITTLE ELM, BUT WE'RE SEEING THAT IN THE LITTLE ELM AREA AS WELL.
ONE OF THE IMPORTANT THINGS YOU CAN TAKE FROM THIS, THIS IS RENTAL PROPERTIES.
AS YOU CAN SEE THE OCCUPANCY RATE IS AT ALMOST 91% IN THE DFW AREA.
IT'S A LITTLE HIGHER THAN THAT IN THE LITTLE ELM AREA.
WE JUST OPENED UP ANOTHER HOUSING ADDITION.
SUPERINTENDENT LAMB WILL BE ABLE TO CONTEST.
THEY'RE FILLING THOSE APARTMENTS VERY QUICKLY OVER THERE.
THEY FILL ALMOST FAST AS THEY CAN OPEN THEM.
WE HAVE A COUPLE OF THINGS GOING ON IN THE SOUTH SIDE OF OUR DISTRICT AS WELL, STARTING TO LOOK AT OPENING SOME RENTAL PROPERTIES DOWN THAT WAY.
BUT AS YOU CAN SEE, EVERYTHING IS GOING UP.
RENTS, THE AVERAGE SIZE IS GETTING A LITTLE BIT LARGER.
BUT THE ASKING RENT OF THE RENT PER SQUARE FOOT AND THE EFFECT OF RENT ARE ALL INCREASING.
AS COST OF HOUSES GO UP, SO DOES THE COST OF RENTAL PROPERTIES AND APARTMENTS.
EVERYTHING IS GOING UP AND COST OF LIVING IS INCREASING.
IN OUR HOUSING MARKET FOR LITTLE ELM, AS YOU CAN SEE, WE'VE TALKED IN THE PAST ABOUT THE RISING COST OF STARTER HOMES AS NEW HOMES AS WELL AS EXISTING, THE AVERAGE COST OF A NEW HOME HAS INCREASED TO 167% SINCE 2010, AND 169% FOR EXISTING HOMES.
OUR AVERAGE COST NOW IS $567,000 FOR AN AVERAGE NEW HOME, AVERAGE EXISTING HOME IS $474,000.
NOW, WHAT'S INDICATIVE OF THAT AND YOU'LL SEE THAT INCREASING TREND, NEXT YEAR ALL OF THOSE NEW HOMES THAT ARE AT 567 WILL BE COMPUTED INTO THE AVERAGE EXISTING HOME PRICE.
THAT PRICE IS GOING TO GO UP AS THOSE NUMBERS GET MOVED INTO THAT EXISTING HOME.
THE AVERAGE NEW HOME PRICE MIGHT NOT INCREASE AND IT COULD BE INDICATIVE OF WHERE WE GET TO WHERE AVERAGE NEW HOME AND IT'S AVERAGE EXISTING COULD BE RELATIVELY CLOSE TOGETHER.
IN THE DFW, THE NEW HOME RANKING REPORT, AS YOU CAN SEE, LITTLE ELM IS STILL COMPETING WITH MANY OTHER AREAS, MIDLOTHIAN COMMUNITIES, SELENA, RED OAK, GARLAND WERE RIGHT THERE IN THE MIDST OF EVERYTHING, FUTURE LOTS.
THE DISTRICT NEW HOMES STARTS AND CLOSINGS, AS I STATED EARLIER, WE ARE NOW OUTPACING IN OUR CLOSINGS THAN WE ARE IN OUR STARTS AND THAT'S STARTING TO EAT INTO OUR INVENTORY.
AGAIN, WE ARE OUTPACING OUR INVENTORY IN 2021 WITH NEW STARTS.
BUT BECAUSE OF THE SUPPLY CHAIN ISSUES, THEY WERE NOT COMPLETING THOSE IN A VERY TIMELY MANNER SO THEY'LL START TO BE ADDING INTO OUR INVENTORY, AND NOW WE'RE STARTING TO SELL THAT INVENTORY.
THIS IS INDICATIVE OF LITTLE ELM ITSELF.
A ONE-YEAR CHANGE, AS YOU CAN SEE, ALL OF THOSE THINGS, THE CLOSINGS, THE QUARTER CLOSINGS, THE UNDER CONSTRUCTIONS ARE ALL GOING DOWN.
BUT AS YOU NOTICE, THE INVENTORY IS BEGINNING TO GO DOWN AS WELL.
AS THAT INVENTORY DECREASES, THOSE CLOSINGS WILL INCREASE.
PRICES WILL INCREASE BECAUSE OF SUPPLY AND DEMAND, AND WE SEE THAT.
THEY CAN DEVELOP LOTS, SO 140 IS DOWN A LITTLE BIT AND OUR FUTURES ARE DOWN AS WELL.
THAT'S BECAUSE WE'RE STARTING TO SEE SOME OF THOSE STARTING TO BE DEVELOPED, AND WE'LL GET INTO THAT A LITTLE BIT LATER.
DISTRICT HOUSING OVERVIEW, AS YOU CAN SEE, OAK POINT IS STILL OUR MOST ACTIVE AREA.
THERE IS ONE MISCOLORED THERE ON THE PRESTWICK ON THE QUARTER STARTS.
THERE'S NO WAY THAT 17 OUTPACES 75.
YELLOW SHOULD BE ON THE 75, NOT ON THE 17 AND THAT'S JUST A MISTAKE ON THAT ONE.
THIS SHOWS YOU WHERE OUR DISTRICT HOUSING OVERVIEW IS GOING.
WE WILL BRING YOU UP TO DATE A LITTLE BIT.
WE WERE NOTIFIED A MONTH AGO, RICK, ABOUT LIQUID VILLAGE, THAT DEVELOPER HAS CHANGED HANDS.
IT'S NOT AFFECTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PROPERTY.
THE PLOT IS STILL THE SAME AND WE HAD A MEETING LATE LAST WEEK WITH THE NEW DEVELOPER TO DISCUSS OUR NEW ELEMENTARY SITE GOING IN THERE,
[02:00:02]
AND SO EVERYTHING'S STILL ON TRACK THERE.IN THE LAST SIX MONTHS, THE AREA IN THE FAR RIGHT-HAND CORNER, THAT IS THE VALENCIA PENINSULA, THE DEVELOPER HAS RECENTLY CHANGED IN THAT ONE AS WELL, AND THE CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES ARE MOVING FORWARD WITH THAT DEVELOPMENT OF THAT PENINSULA AS WELL.
RIGHT NOW OUR MOST ACTIVE IS IN NORTHLAKE ESTATES, THAT'S ON SOUTH PALOMA CREEK.
THEY'VE ALREADY HAD THE STREETS IN.
THEY'RE STARTING TO DEVELOP THE LOTS NOW, AND THAT'S OUR NEXT BIG GROWTH AREA.
THAT'S GOING TO COME IN THE NEXT SIX MONTHS, THEY'LL START BUILDING HOMES THERE.
THEN OUR NEXT ONE IS DOWN ON THE CORNER OF WITT ROAD AND KING IN THE HACKBERRY ELEMENTARY THAT THEY'VE GOT THAT CORNER LOT ALL DEVELOPED WITH STREETS ARE IN PLACE, UTILITIES ARE IN PLACE AND THEY'RE GOING TO START CONSTRUCTING AND BUILDING PADS THERE VERY SHORTLY AS WELL.
THE MULTI-FAMILY OVERVIEW, IF YOU NOTICE, THE ONE THAT WAS GOING ON ACROSS THE STREET IS NOW GONE OFF THIS MAP BECAUSE IT IS RELATIVELY COMPLETE.
THEY'RE NO LONGER DEVELOPING THAT AREA, THEY'RE NO LONGER UNDER CONSTRUCTION.
BUT THE ONE DOWN BY STRIKE MIDDLE SCHOOL IS STILL BEING DEVELOPED.
I THINK AS YOU DRIVE BY THERE, YOU'LL SEE THAT THAT CONSTRUCTION IS ONGOING.
A 10-YEAR FORECAST BY GRADE LEVEL, AS YOU SEE IS PRETTY STAGNANT THIS YEAR AT 0.9% GROWTH, THEY PROJECTED 2.7% GROWTH THE NEXT YEAR, 2.8 THE FOLLOWING YEAR.
THEN THAT'S ABOUT THE TIME WE WILL PUT THE NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ONLINE AND HAVE SOME ADDITIONS TO THE HIGH SCHOOL AS WELL.
TEN-YEAR FORECAST FOR ELEMENTARY CAMPUS, YOU'LL SEE THAT THE OAK POINT ELEMENTARY IS BY FAR OUR LARGEST CAMPUS, WITH 1,091 PROJECTED AND THE 25/26 YEAR.
BUT THAT'S A LITTLE MISLEADING AS WELL BECAUSE THAT'S WHEN ELEMENTARY NUMBER 7 WILL COME ONLINE AND A BIG PORTION OF THOSE STUDENTS WILL BE MOVING DOWN TO THE LAKEWOOD VILLAGE ELEMENTARY SITE.
THAT WILL DEFINITELY GO DOWN ITS MAXIMUM CAPACITY.
IF YOU KEEP IN MIND WE DO HAVE FIVE PORTABLES AT THAT SITE SO THAT'S WHY THAT IS SO MUCH LARGER CAPACITY THAN ALL OF OUR OTHER ELEMENTARY SITES BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL RELATIVELY THE SAME AT ABOUT 777.
THAT'S WHAT THAT CAPACITY WILL MOVE BACK TO ONCE WE GET THE NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ON-SITE.
MOVING INTO THE HIGH SCHOOL, YOU'LL SEE THERE THAT THEY EXCEED THEIR MAXIMUM CAPACITY.
THEY'LL EXCEED NEXT YEAR 26-28.
THEN BY THE 24/25 OR THE 25/26 WE'LL START BRINGING ON THE ADDITIONS.
AT THE HIGH SCHOOL, THEY WILL BE COMING ONLINE AS A RESULT OF THIS NEW BOND, SO THAT WILL INCREASE ITS CAPACITY BY ANOTHER 1,000 STUDENTS.
IS THAT CORRECT? BY ANOTHER 1,000 STUDENTS, THAT WILL GIVE US SOME GROWTH ROOM THERE AND SOME GROWTH CAPACITY.
PROJECTED ENROLLMENTS, AS YOU CAN SEE FROM LAST YEAR, THOSE HAVE BEEN ADJUSTED QUITE A BIT BECAUSE OF THE STAGNANT GROWTH YEAR THAT WE HAD THIS YEAR.
BUT WE STILL EXPECT TO HIT 10,000 BY THE 32/33 SCHOOL YEAR, WHICH IS ONLY ABOUT SEVEN YEARS AWAY.
GROWTH IS STILL COMING, STUDENTS ARE STILL COMING, AND WE FEEL WE HAVE A GREAT PLAN IN PLACE TO HANDLE THIS ADJUSTED GROWTH THAT WE SEE COMING.
BUT IF YOU REMEMBER, WE WILL BE NEEDING TO GO OUT FOR ANOTHER BOND IN A FEW YEARS TO ANSWER THE NEED IN OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL POPULATION GROWTH THAT WE SEE COMING.
>> ANY QUESTIONS? ANY QUESTIONS FROM ANY BOARD MEMBERS?
>> TRIED TO SPEED THROUGH THAT. I KNOW THAT'S A LOT OF NUMBERS AND [OVERLAPPING]
>> A LOT OF TALKING BUT YOU GUYS SEE THESE AND THEY HAVEN'T REALLY CHANGED A WHOLE LOT.
I THINK YOU SEE WHAT WE HAVE COMING AND I THINK WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT IT.
>> WE'LL GO TO THE CITIZEN INPUT.
[8. Citizen Input]
MS. [INAUDIBLE] DO WE HAVE ANY CITIZEN INPUT? WOULD REMIND THE SPEAKERS WHEN YOU COME UP, THERE'S A FIVE-MINUTE CLOCK RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU IN ALL THE SIDES.WHEN IT GETS DOWN TO TWO MINUTES OR TWO OR THREE MINUTES, I BELIEVE IT TURNS YELLOW.
WHEN IT GETS DOWN TO RED, IT GOES DOWN TO ONE MINUTE, JUST SO YOU CAN SEE.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ABIDE BY THE FIVE MINUTES PLEASE, FOR THE COURTESY OF ALL.
FIRST PERSON WE'LL GO WITH IS BETH WOOD.
WE WILL GO TO MEG REED. MS. REED?
>> SORRY. I WAS SITTING FROM FAR.
>> YOU ARE FINE. NO PROBLEMS. TAKE YOUR TIME.
>> GOOD EVENING. THANKS FOR GIVING ME AN OPPORTUNITY TO SPEAK TONIGHT.
I LIVE IN FRISCO LAKES, THAT DEPENDABLY CONSERVATIVE NEIGHBORHOOD NEAR HERE,
[02:05:01]
MUCH OF WHICH IS PART OF LITTLE ELM ISD.I'M NOT ONE OF THOSE CONSERVATIVE VOTERS THOUGH.
IN FACT, I WORKED A LITTLE BIT ON FOR CAMPAIGNS THIS ELECTION.
THE TWO THAT WON ONE IN FRISCO ISD AND THE TWO THAT LOST HERE.
I'M NOT SURE WHAT THE NEW IDEOLOGICAL BALANCE WILL BE ON YOUR NEW BOARD.
UNTIL VERY RECENTLY, SCHOOL BOARDS AND MUNICIPAL RACES WERE DECIDEDLY NONPARTISAN AS THEY SHOULD BE.
BUT I DO WANT TO SAY THAT NOBODY SHOULD FEEL THAT LITTLE ELM ISD IS WINNERS HAVE A MANDATE TO PUSH THROUGH THE CHRISTIAN NATIONALIST AGENDA THAT UNTIL THIS ELECTION WAS BULLDOZING ITS WAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
MR. BURTON ONLY WON BY 165 VOTES.
ALTHOUGH I'M SURPRISED HE WANTED ALL BECAUSE AS RECENTLY AS LATE APRIL, HE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT HAS BE WORSE, BUT HE WAS PRETTY SURE IT WASN'T GOOD.
IT'S OBVIOUS THAT HE AND THE DEFEATED FRISCO CANDIDATES GOT THEIR MARCHING ORDERS FROM THE STATE AND NATIONAL PACTS ENDORSED BY CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICANS WITH THE GOAL OF GETTING PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
THE THING IS, PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE STILL PRETTY TERRIFIC, OBVIOUSLY, INCREDIBLE STUDENTS HERE TONIGHT, AND AWESOME PROGRAMS ALREADY GOING ON AND MANY MORE IN THE WORKS.
THEY ARE TERRIFIC DESPITE THE FEAR MONGERING TO THE CONTRARY, CRT HAS NEVER BEEN TAUGHT IN ELEMENTARY OR HIGH SCHOOLS, BUT IT'S NOW BEING USED AS CODE FOR THE UGLY PARTS OF HISTORY.
SAYING THAT IT WILL MAKE KIDS FEEL BAD.
SLAVERY AND JIM CROW SHOULD MAKE YOU KIDS FEEL BAD, BUT NOT ABOUT THEMSELVES.
GERMAN KIDS LEARN ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST AS A WAY TO MAKE SURE IT NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN.
OUR KIDS ARE TOUGH ENOUGH TO LEARN ALL OUR HISTORY TOO.
AS FOR LGBTQ FOLKS, THEY'VE ALWAYS EXISTED.
WE'VE SURELY SHARED BATHROOMS WITH THEM AND WE'RE FINE.
THEY ARE AT STATISTICALLY ZERO RISK OF BEING ASSAULTED BY A TRANS KID IN THE BATHROOM.
IT SHOULD BE VERY EASY TO EXPLAIN LGBTQ KIDS EXISTENCE.
IF YOUR KIDS ASK QUESTIONS, KIDS ASK TOUGH QUESTIONS ALL THE TIME.
LGBTQ KIDS ARE TRULY NO THREAT TO YOUR KID SAFETY, AND NEITHER IS THE EXISTENCE OF BOOKS THAT TELL THEIR STORY.
YOU AS PARENTS HAVE ABSOLUTE CONTROL OVER WHAT YOUR KIDS READ.
BUT REMEMBER, YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO CONTROL WHAT OTHER PEOPLE'S KIDS READ.
THE SUPER CONSERVATIVE CANDIDATES LOST IN FRISCO, MCKINNEY, PLANO, AND PROSPER.
WHICH SAYS PRETTY CLEARLY THAT THE TIDE IS TURNING.
THAT CONSERVATIVES ARE FREE TO DO THEIR THING, BUT YOU'RE NOT FREE TO MAKE THE REST OF US ALSO DO YOUR THING.
I TRULY HOPE THIS BOARD WILL KEEP ITS FOCUS WHERE IT BELONGS, ON STUDENT'S SAFETY, TEACHER RETENTION, AND A CURRICULUM THAT RECOGNIZES THAT DIVERSITY IS AN ASSET, NOT A LIABILITY. THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU, MS. REED [APPLAUSE] THAI PHILLIPS.
I HAVE A POST FROM A FACEBOOK I WANT US TO READ.
ANONYMOUS PARTICIPANT SAYS, I'M NOT SURE IF THIS IS ALLOWED HERE, AND I'M SURE I WILL BE CRUCIFIED FOR THIS IF IT IS ALLOWED.
SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THE SUBSTITUTE SITUATION.
AS OF NOW, THERE ARE SUBS ALL OVER THE PLACE PICKING UP JOBS SOON AS AN ABSENCE IS PUT INTO THE SYSTEM AND THEN LIKE CLOCKWORK, THEY CANCEL THE DAY BEFORE.
TEACHERS NEED TO TAKE DAYS OFF AND SHOULD BE ABLE TO DO SO WITHOUT THE GUILT, THE STRAIN IT WILL PUT ON THE CAMPUS AND IN CONTENT TEAM.
I'M BEYOND FRUSTRATED AND I KNOW OUR CAMPUSES TOO.
IS THIS HAPPENING EVERYWHERE? IS THERE A SOLUTION? I MET A LOSS.
WELL, FIRST OF ALL, ANY SCHOOL EMPLOYEE SHOULD NEVER HAVE TO FEAR ABOUT SPEAKING ABOUT ISSUES AND SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO IT ANONYMOUSLY.
BUT AS THIS BOARD HAS FIGURED IT HAS IF YOU HAVEN'T FIGURED IT OUT YET, I GET THESE TYPES OF ANONYMOUS COMPLAINTS ALL THE TIME.
BUT LITTLE ELM TEACHERS ARE OUR HEROES.
I THINK I HAVE A GREAT SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM.
ALMOST 50,000 PEOPLE LIVE IN LITTLE ELM ISD WITH MORE THAN 8,000 STUDENTS, AS WE SAW, 52% CONSIDERED AT RISK OF DROPPING OUT.
HOWEVER, ONLY 3,328 PEOPLE VOTED.
FRISCO LAKES COMMUNITY HAVE 1204 VOTERS.
NOW OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT IS CURRENTLY RESORTING TO OUTSIDE SERVICES TO FIND SUBSTITUTES.
THE SCHOOL DISTRICT CAN'T PUNISH INDIVIDUALS EMPLOYEE FROM AN OUTSIDE SERVICE I GUESS.
[02:10:05]
WE NEED TO INCREASE OUR POOL OF SUBSTITUTES FROM OUR OWN AREA.WE NEED PEOPLE WHO ARE TAKING INTEREST IN SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS AND HAVE THE TIME TO SUBSTITUTE.
WELL, I GAVE YOU THE FRISCO LAKES RETIREMENT COMMUNITY.
WHERE YOU HAVE 55, THAT 55 AGE TO LIVE THERE.
THEY REPRESENT ONE OUT OF EVERY THREE ENGAGE VOTERS IN OUR DISTRICT.
I LISTENED TO TWO FRISCO LAKES VOTERS SITTING BEHIND ME TONIGHT AND THEY HAD TO ASK, WHAT IS WALKER? WHAT IS BLUE ANGELS? LET'S INVITE THEM TO BECOME LOBO.
YOU SEE, IT'S NOT THE PARENTS DECIDING WHO SITS ON THE SCHOOL BOARD.
WHEN SOMEONE WANTS TO BE ELECTED ON THIS BOARD, ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS GO TO FRISCO LAKES COMMUNITY MEETINGS AND BLOCK LOCK THAT AREA.
THEY DON'T NEED TO GO TO GLEN COVE OR VILLAGE OF WOODLAKE OR HAVE HAD VERY OLD POINT.
THAT'S THE AMOUNT OF INFLUENCE ONE COMMUNITY HAS ON DECISIONS AFFECT OUR CHILDREN.
LISTEN, LOBO COMMUNITY, YOUR CURRENT AND FORMER BOARD MEMBERS KNOW THIS.
THEY HAVE A LIST OF CONSTITUENTS WHO VOTE.
I'VE SEEN MR. ENGLISH'S DATABASE.
THEY DON'T KNOCK ON THE DOORS OF PEOPLE WITH LOW OR NO VOTING HISTORY.
THEY KNOW EXACTLY WHO TO TURN TO WHAT SAY TO THEM.
THEY KNOW TO SHOW UP AT THE FRISCO FIRE DEPARTMENT ON THAT STATION ON THAT FIRST DAY OF EARLY VOTING AND HANDOUT, COMMUNITY ENDORSED BALLOTS.
WHY DO THESE BOARD MEMBERS IN THEIR ELECTION PARTIES NOT ASK THESE INDIVIDUALS AT THAT SAME TIME, HEY, COME VOLUNTEER AT OUR SCHOOLS AND BE SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS.
LAST WEEK, I WAS ON A FIELD TRIP TO THE BUSH PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY, AND IT CAN CANCELED THE WEEK BEFORE.
NOW, I LISTENED TO A VIDEO FROM A CONSERVATIVE PRESIDENT ABOUT, NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND BECAUSE HE KNEW THAT THE SCHOOL SYSTEM WAS BROKEN AND NEGATIVELY IMPACTED MINORITY NEIGHBORHOODS.
HECK, IF PRESIDENT BUSH SAID THAT TODAY, PEOPLE WOULD SKIN HIM ALIVE FOR TALKING ABOUT CRT INDOCTRINATION.
I DID THOSE FIELD TRIPS DESPITE HAVING FIVE SURGERIES ON MY ANKLE, THIS BOARD HAS SEEN ME ON A SCOOTER BEFORE.
HERE'S MY CHALLENGE, MR. ENGLISH, MR. BURTON, WHO CHECKED OUT EARLY ON US, MR. MONTOYA, MR. HAWKINS, HEY, HARDING'S I SEE YOU OUT THERE.
ARE YOU LISTENING CAREFULLY? LET'S GO BLOCK WALK.
LET'S GO TO YOUR CONSTITUENTS, GET YOUR LISTS. I WILL GO WITH YOU.
IT HURTS LIKE HECK TO BE ON MY FEET, BUT I MAY NEED A SIXTH SURGERY, BUT TIME IT'S DONE, BUT I WILL BE RIGHT THERE BESIDE YOU.
LET'S GO AND SHARE THE NEEDS OF OUR CHILDREN AND HOW THEY NEED GOOD TEACHERS.
22% TURNOVER RATE WAS THAT WAS WHAT I HEARD EARLIER.
LET'S ASK THEM TO BECOME LOBO'S AND SHARE IN THE LEISD EXPERIENCE.
LET'S OPEN UP TO THEM ABOUT WHAT OUR TEACHERS NEED AND HOW THEY CAN HELP SUPPORT OUR SCHOOLS.
1,200 VOTERS IN FRISCO LAKES FULL RETIREES AND SOCIAL NETWORKS.
IMAGINE IF WE CAN FIND 20 RESIDENTS WILLING TO SUBSTITUTE JUST FIVE TIMES A YEAR.
THAT'S 100 TIMES THAT ONE OF OUR TEACHERS COULD GO TO A CRITICAL DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT.
LET'S MAKE TEACHERS FEEL LIKE HEROES AGAIN.
YOU KNOW HOW TO CONTACT ME, BRING YOUR LIST, PICK WHEN YOU'RE AVAILABLE.
LET'S DO SOMETHING POSITIVE [NOISE] ACCEPT THE CHALLENGE. GO LOBO.
>> THANK YOU MR. PHILLIPS [APPLAUSE].
I'LL CALL ONE MORE TIME, BETH WOOD, TO MAKE SURE IS BETH HERE.
I DO NOT SEE, WE WILL GO ON TO THE REST OF THE AGENDA, GOING TO THE APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES.
[9. Approval of Minutes]
WE HAVE OUR FIRST ACTION ITEM AND APPROVAL OF MINUTES.WE'LL CONSIDER THE APPROVAL OF THE REGULAR BOARD MEETING MINUTES FROM APRIL 17TH, 2023.
I HOPE EVERYONE'S HAD A CHANCE TO READ THROUGH THEM.
DO I HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT THE APPROVAL OF MINUTES FROM APRIL 17TH, 2023.
>> I HAVE IT FROM MONIQUE. DO I HAVE A SECOND?
>> SECOND FOR MARY.? DO WE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? I SEE NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR RAISE YOUR HAND. ALL THOSE OPPOSED.
MOTION PASSES. WE'LL GO TO ITEM B, WHICH YOU CONSIDER THE APPROVAL OF A SPECIAL MEETING MINUTES FROM APRIL 18, 2023.
DO I HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE?
>> SORRY. I'M SITTING HERE RIGHT AND REAL QUICK.

MOTION PASSES. CONSIDER THE APPROVAL OF THE SPECIALTY MEETING.
MINUTES LEVEL THREE GRIEVANCE FROM APRIL 18, 2023.
>> FROM MARY. TO HAVE A SECOND.
>> DAVID ANY QUESTIONS? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR RAISE YOUR HAND.
I GOT TWO ABSTAINING. ALL THOSE AGAINST? MY RIGHT AND LEFT. WE'LL GO ON TO THE ACTION ITEMS.
[10. Action Items]
MS. BROWN, LOOKS LIKE YOU GOT A LONG LIST COMING TO US,[02:15:03]
SO JUST HOP ON UP HERE FOR A WHILE.WE'LL GO TO THE FIRST ONE WHICH IS TO DISCUSS AND APPROVE, THE REVISED 2022-2023 COMPENSATION PLAN.
>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT OLSON, MR. LAMB, BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
THE FIRST THAT I'M BRINGING FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION THIS EVENING IS THE REVISED 2022, 2023 COMPENSATION PLAN.
IT WAS DISCUSSED IN DETAIL AT THE BOARD WORKSHOP THIS EVENING.
BUT WE ARE IN A CONSTANT STATE OF ANALYZING THE MARKET.
FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS, WE HAVE NOTICED A TREND WITHIN OUR DISTRICT, BUT REALLY DISTRICTS ACROSS THE METROPOLITAN AREA OF OUR AUXILIARY POSITIONS, ESPECIALLY THOSE ENTRY-LEVEL AUXILIARY POSITIONS AND ENTRY-LEVEL PAIR PROFESSIONAL CLERK POSITIONS BEING VERY DIFFICULT TO FILL.
WHEN WE START TALKING TO PEOPLE ABOUT WHY THEY AREN'T ACCEPTING JOBS OR WHY THEY'RE LEAVING OUR DISTRICT IN THOSE ENTRY-LEVEL POSITIONS, A LOT OF IT HAS TO DO WITH COMPENSATION.
AS A RESULT, RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MR. GASIUS AND OPERATIONS TEAM AND WORKING WITH MS. ADAMS AND THE BUSINESS SERVICES DEPARTMENT, WE ARE BRINGING THE RECOMMENDATION THAT WE INCREASE CERTAIN SELECT PAY GRADES WITHIN OUR COMPENSATION PLAN THAT ARE BELOW $15 AN HOUR TO A MINIMUM OF $15 PER HOUR.
SPECIFICALLY, ON OUR AUXILIARY PAY SCALE, WE'RE LOOKING AT PAY GRADES 1 AND 2 OF INCREASING THOSE TO A MINIMUM HOURLY RATE OF $15 PER HOUR AND ON OUR PARAPROFESSIONAL AND CLERK PAY SCALE, THREE PAY GRADES, PAY GRADES 1,2, AND 3 THAT WE'RE RECOMMENDING INCREASING TO $15 AN HOUR.
WE BELIEVE THAT THIS WILL INCREASE OUR COMPETITIVENESS.
WE DO KNOW THAT WE'RE COMPETING WITH OTHER ISDS IN THE AREA WHO HAVE VERY COMPETITIVE COMPENSATION RATES FOR THOSE EMPLOYEES AS WELL AS NON-ISDS, SUCH AS BUGGIES AND CUTIE AND RACE TRACKS, SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE INCENTIVIZE STAYING HERE IN OUR DISTRICT AND THEN ATTRACT GREAT TALENT TO COME TO OUR DISTRICTS.
WITH ALL THAT SAID, THERE IS A PRICE TAG.
OBVIOUSLY, WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT INCREASING COMPENSATION, THIS WILL COST APPROXIMATELY $300,000 ANNUALLY, AND AGAIN, WORKING WITH MS.ADAMS AND THE BUSINESS SERVICES TEAM, WE'RE WORKING ON GETTING THAT INTO THE BUDGET.
THE REVISED COMPENSATION PLAN WAS SENT TO YOU AND SO WITH THAT, THE ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE REVISED 2022,2023 COMPENSATION AS SUBMITTED.
BUT ONE OTHER THING I DO WANT TO MENTION BEFORE YOU MOVE INTO THE MOTION, WE ARE GOING TO BE BRINGING THE 23, 24 COMPENSATION PLAN TO THE JUNE 26TH BOARD MEETING, THE REGULARLY SCHEDULED BOARD MEETING AT THE END OF JUNE.
HOWEVER, THE BUDGET HAS BEEN DEVELOPED WITH THE BOARD'S DIRECTION TO AWARD ALL EMPLOYEES.
THIS IS NOT JUST OUR AUXILIARY AND PAIR PROFESSIONAL EMPLOYEES, BUT ALL THE GREATER OF EITHER A THREE PERCENT INCREASE OR THREE PERCENT RAISE OR A POTENTIAL LEGISLATIVE DIRECTED INCREASE FOR 23, 24.
WE ARE LOOKING AT INCREASES ACROSS THE BOARD FOR ALL EMPLOYEES AND IT WILL BE THE GREATER OF EITHER THREE PERCENT OR WHATEVER DIRECTION WE GET FROM THE LEGISLATURE FOR 23, 24.
I'LL GO BACK TO THE RECOMMENDATION.
THE ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE REVISED 2022, 2023 COMPENSATION PLAN AS SUBMITTED.
>> DO I HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT?
>> DO WE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR MS. BROWN? SEEING NONE. ALL THOSE IN FAVOR RAISE YOUR HAND.
>> MS. BROWN, WE'RE GOING TO GO CONSIDER THE APPROVAL OF THE HIRING OF THE DIRECTOR FOR ACCOUNTABILITY.
>> THANK YOU. AFTER A THOROUGH INTERVIEW AND SELECTION PROCESS, WE ARE BRINGING TO THE BOARD FOR CONSIDERATION OUR RECOMMENDATION FOR DIRECTOR FOR ACCOUNTABILITY.
THE ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE HIRE OF THE NEW DIRECTOR FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AS WAS DISCUSSED IN COURT SESSION.
>> DO I HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT THIS?
>> SECOND FROM DALIAN. ANY QUESTIONS? SEEING NONE, ALL THOSE IN FAVOR RAISE YOUR HAND.
ALL THOSE AGAINST. MOTION PASSES.
>> WE'D LIKE TO ANNOUNCE THAT OUR NEW DIRECTOR FOR ACCOUNTABILITY IS MR. JASON EVANS.
>> WE WILL GO ON TO CONSIDER THE APPROVAL OF HIRING THE DIRECTOR OF ACADEMIC PROGRAMS.
>> THANK YOU AGAIN. AGAIN, WE'VE BEEN VERY BUSY AND SO WE DID MORE INTERVIEWING VERY CAREFULLY AND THOROUGHLY.
WE ARE BRINGING TO THE BOARD FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION AND RECOMMENDATION FOR DIRECTOR FOR ACADEMIC PROGRAMS. WE RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE HIRE OF THE NEW DIRECTOR FOR ACADEMIC PROGRAMS, AS WAS DISCUSSED IN CLOSED SESSION.
>> DO I HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT THIS?
>> DO I HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? SEEING NONE, ALL THOSE IN FAVOR.
[02:20:04]
>> WE'D LIKE TO ANNOUNCE THAT CURRENT LOBO, MS. KIMBERLY JACKSON IS OUR NEW DIRECTOR FOR ACADEMIC PROGRAMS.
>> AWESOME. CONGRATULATIONS. CONSIDER THE APPROVAL OF THE HIRING OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR CONSTRUCTION SERVICES.
>> THANK YOU, SIR. AGAIN, WE ENGAGED IN A REALLY THOROUGH AND THOUGHTFUL INTERVIEW PROCESS AND WE BRING TO YOU FOR CONSIDERATION, RECOMMENDATION FOR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR CONSTRUCTION SERVICES.
THE ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE HIRE OF THE NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR CONSTRUCTION SERVICES, AS WAS DISCUSSED IN CLOSED SESSION.
>> DO I HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT?
>> SECOND FROM DAVID. THAT'S WHAT I HEARD FIRST.
ANY QUESTIONS? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR RAISE YOUR HAND. ALL THOSE OPPOSED?
>> REAL QUICK. WE'D LIKE TO ANNOUNCE THAT THE NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR CONSTRUCTION SERVICES IS MR. MICKEY JAMES.
NOW WE'LL GO TO CONSIDER THE HIRING OF THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR SPECIAL POPULATIONS.
>> YES. AGAIN, WE ARE PROUD TO BRING YOU A RECOMMENDATION AFTER A CAREFUL AND THOROUGH INTERVIEW AND SELECTION PROCESS.
WE RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE HIRE OF THE NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR SPECIAL POPULATIONS, AS WAS DISCUSSED IN CLOSED SESSION.
>> DO I HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT?
>> SECOND FROM KEN. ANY QUESTIONS? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR RAISE YOUR HAND.
ALL THOSE OPPOSED. MOTION PASSES.
>> WE'D LIKE TO MAKE THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT CURRENT LOBO MS. KRISTY ROBERTS, IS OUR NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR SPECIAL POPULATIONS.
>> CONGRATULATIONS TO MS. ROBERTS.
>> THANK YOU. NOW WE GET THE RUN OF RICK.
ALL THE ITEMS FOR MR. MARK, CONSIDER THE APPROVAL OF THE SURVEY REQUESTS FOR LIQUID VILLAGE SITE, MR. MARTIN.
>> YES. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LETTING ME MAKE THESE PRESENTATIONS. SEE YOU TONIGHT.
THIS IS IN ADVANCE OF THE START OF THE DESIGN FOR THE NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, WHICH I HOPE WILL CONSIDER THE DESIGN TEAM TONIGHT AS WELL.
BUT WE DO RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THIS SELECTION AND THE FEE IS PRESENTED AND AUTHORIZE THE SUPERINTENDENT OR HIS DESIGNEE TO EXECUTE THE REQUIRED CONTRACT DOCUMENTS AS PRESENTED.
>> DO I HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT?
>> DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR THIS ITEM? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR RAISE YOUR HAND.
ALL THOSE OPPOSED. MOTION PASSES.
>> DID WE NEED TO MAKE ANY ANNOUNCEMENTS?
>> CONSIDER THE APPROVAL OF THE ARCHITECT SELECTION FOR ELEMENTARY NUMBER 7.
>> YES. IT IS THE RECOMMENDATION FROM THE ADMINISTRATION THAT WE SELECT CORGAN AS THE ARCHITECT OF RECORD FOR ELEMENTARY NUMBER 7.
CORGAN, IF YOU REMEMBER THAT OUR INDOOR FACILITY AND THEY'RE CURRENTLY DOING THE RENOVATIONS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AS WELL.
ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE SELECTION AND THE FEE HAS PRESENTED AND AUTHORIZES THE SUPERINTENDENT OR HIS DESIGNEE TO EXECUTE THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS.
>> DO I HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT?
>> ANY QUESTIONS? SEEING NONE ALL THOSE IN FAVOR RAISE YOUR HAND. ALL THOSE OPPOSED.
CONSIDER APPROVAL OF THE HVAC REPLACEMENT AT ZELLERS.
>> YES. THIS IS A COMBINATION OF ANOTHER PIECE OF EQUIPMENT THAT HAS FAILED PLUS NOW TYING ALL OF THE CONTROL SYSTEMS INTO THE DISTRICT'S WEB.
THIS IS THE ONLY CAMPUS I UNDERSTAND THAT CANNOT BE SEEN OR CONTROLLED FROM A CENTRAL LOCATION LIKE THE REST OF THE BUILDINGS IN THE DISTRICTS.
THIS WOULD BRING IT UP TO PAR WITH THE REST OF THE CAMPUSES IN THE DISTRICT.
THE ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THIS VENDOR AND THE COST IS PRESENTED AND AUTHORIZE THE SUPERINTENDENT OR IS DESIGNATED TO EXECUTE THE REQUIRED PURCHASE DOCUMENTS.
>> WE HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT.
>> I HEARD MONIQUE FIRST. ANY QUESTIONS?
>> I HAVE A QUESTION, HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO REMOVE THE ORIGINAL WHEN YOU INSTALL THIS NEW ONE? IS THIS GOING TO BE A SUMMERTIME ACTIVITY THEY'RE GOING TO DO IT, AND WHEN DO THEY PLAN TO DO THAT?
>> THIS WILL BE DONE BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS IN FALL.
>> WE HAD A CONVERSATION TODAY WITH THE CONTROLS COMPANY THAT'S PUTTING IN THE CONTROL SYSTEMS AND THEY'RE READY TO GO.
>> ALL WE NEED IS THE APPROVAL TONIGHT AND WE'LL GET THEM GOING.
>> UNIT WILL BE NOW CENTRALLY CONTROLLED?
>> A COMPARABLE TO ALL OTHER UNITS?
[02:25:03]
SOMETHING STARTS TO GO WRONG WITH A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT AT THE CAMPUS, IT WILL FLAG IT, AND SO THEY'LL BE ABLE TO GET ONTO IT SOON.>> OF A MOTION AND A SECOND. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR RAISE YOUR HAND.
ALL THOSE OPPOSE, MOTION PASSES.
CONSIDER APPROVAL OF THE ARCHITECT SELECTION FOR THE CLASSROOM ADDITIONS THAT LITTLE ELM HIGH SCHOOL.
>> YES. AS YOU KNOW, WE HAVE A LARGE ADDITION, SOME RENOVATION WORK WE'RE PLANNING TO DO AT THE HIGH SCHOOL.
SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN NEEDED FOR SOME TIME AND HOPEFULLY WE CAN GET THIS DONE QUICKLY.
WE ARE RECOMMENDING THAT WE SELECT PBK AS YOUR ARCHITECT OF RECORD FOR THIS EDITION.
THE ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS THE APPROVAL OF THIS SELECTION AND FEE IS PRESENTED AND AUTHORIZED THE SUPERINTENDENT OR IS DESIGNATED TO EXECUTE THE REQUIRED CONTRACT DOCUMENTS.
>> DO I HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT?
>> I GOT FROM DALIAN ON FIRST, SECOND?
>> HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ON THIS PARTICULAR ITEM? ALL THOSE IN FAVOR RAISE YOUR HAND. MOTION PASSES.
>> THANK YOU. CONSIDER THE APPROVAL OF THE ARCTIC SELECTION FOR THE ORCHESTRA ADDITION AS STRIKING WALKER MIDDLE SCHOOLS?
>> YES. WALKER AS YOU KNOW, WAS THE ORIGINAL ARCTIC RECORD FOR BOTH MIDDLE SCHOOLS, AND WE'RE RECOMMENDING THAT WE GO BACK TO THEM TO ADD ONTO THOSE CAMPUSES.
THEY'VE GOT ALL THE INFORMATION, THEY KNOW THE PROJECTS.
WE RECOMMEND THE APPROVAL OF THE SELECTION AND THE FEES PRESENTED AND TO AUTHORIZE THE SUPERINTENDENT OR AS DESIGNATED TO EXECUTE THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS.
THAT WILL SAY THAT, IT WON'T BE READY IN TIME FOR THIS FALL [LAUGHTER] BUT IT WILL BE READY THE FOLLOWING FALL.
>> UNDERSTOOD. DO I HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT THIS, FROM KEN? SECOND.
>> SECOND FOR MARY, ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? SEEING NONE, EVERYBODY IN FAVOR RAISE YOUR HAND.
LAST ONE, MR. MARTIN, CONSIDER APPROVAL OF PLAYGROUND ADDITIONS AND REPLACEMENTS DISTRICT WIDE.
>> IF YOU REMEMBER, THIS IS ONE OF THE MAJOR LINE ITEMS IN OUR CURRENT BUDGET AND THAT WAS TO IMPROVE THE PLAYGROUNDS ALL OVER ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND ADD A SECOND ONE TO THOSE THAT DIDN'T HAVE IT.
I THINK INITIALLY WE HAD SCHEDULED TO DO A PORTION OF THEM THIS SUMMER AND A PORTION OF THEM NEXT SUMMER.
IT'S ALL BEEN MOVED UP TO TRY AND GET AS MUCH DONE AS WE CAN, AS SOON AS WE CAN.
THE SCHEDULE WILL PROBABLY ALLOW US TO RENOVATE THE EXISTING ONES, SINCE BUILDING THE NEW ONES WILL TAKE MUCH LONGER, I WON'T BE ABLE TO HAVE THOSE BY THIS FALL, BUT WOULD PLAN TO GET AS MANY DONE THIS SUMMER AS WE CAN.
THE ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS THE APPROVAL OF THIS VENDOR AND THE COST IS ASSOCIATED, AND AUTHORIZE THE SUPERINTENDENT OR DESIGNATE TO EXECUTE OTHER REQUIRED PURCHASE DOCUMENTS.
>> DO WE HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT?
>> WHAT DO WE THINK AN ESTIMATED TIMELINE IS? I KNOW IT'S GOING TO BE TOUGH TO GET EVERYTHING IN, BUT WHAT DO WE THINK AN ESTIMATED TIMELINE WILL BE TO GET ALL THE PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT UPGRADED AND REDONE?
>> WELL, THE IDEA AGAIN WAS TO START WITH THE EXISTING ONES AND CHANGE OUT THE EQUIPMENT, PLUG-AND-PLAY, PULL OUT THE OLD STUFF, BUT THE NEW STUFF AND THAT CAN BE DONE FAIRLY QUICKLY.
CHANGING THE SURFACES, THE PLAY AREAS, TO THE TURF PRODUCT THAT WE'VE TALKED ABOUT, PUTTING UP NEW SHADE STRUCTURES, ALL THAT STUFF CAN BE DONE DURING THE SUMMER.
WE DON'T FEEL LIKE THERE'S AN ISSUE HAVING IT DONE THIS FALL.
THE NEWER ONES, THERE'S ACTIVITY WORK THAT HAS TO BE DONE, THERE'S DRAINAGE THAT HAS TO BE DONE, I MEAN, THERE'S A LOT MORE OUTSIDE WORK TO HAPPEN.
THAT'S WHY I WAS SAYING THE NEW ONES THAT WE'RE GOING TO ADD, WILL GO INTO THE SCHOOL YEAR.
BUT I CERTAINLY HOPE THAT BY THE END OF THE YEAR, WE'D BE ABLE TO HAVE THEM DONE.
>> I DO. I KNOW FROM BEING ON THE BOND COMMITTEE FOR THIS BOND PACKAGE THAT UPGRADED THESE PLAYGROUNDS, WE'RE STILL STAYING WITH THEM, MAKING THEM ACCESSIBLE FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.
>> WILL THAT BE WITH THE EXISTING OR WILL THAT BE ON NEW PLAYGROUNDS?
>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? SEEING NONE.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR RAISE YOUR HAND.
ALL THOSE OPPOSED. MOTION PASSES.
THANK YOU, MR. MARTIN. APPRECIATE IT VERY MUCH.
>> WITH THAT, I WILL GO TO THE CONSENT AGENDA.
[11. Consent Agenda]
DO I HAVE ANY BOARD MEMBERS THAT NEED TO PULL ANY OF THE CONSENT AGENDA ITEMS FOR ANY REASON?>> SEEING NONE, DO I HAVE A MOTION TO ACCEPT THE AGENDA AS PRESENTED?
>> I HAVE IT FOR KENDALL. DO I HAVE A SECOND.
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR, RAISE YOUR HAND.
[02:30:03]
[INAUDIBLE] WE WILL GO INTO BOARD PRESIDENTS COMMENTS.[12. Board President Comments]
ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED SHOW APPRECIATION FOR OUR TEACHERS LAST WEEK DURING TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK.I WANT TO ESPECIALLY THANK MS. WATKINS FOR HELPING US AS A BOARD, CONTINUED TO DO SOMETHING FOR OUR TEACHERS.
WE WERE ABLE TO GO OUT AND DELIVER LITTLE SURPRISES TO ALL OF OUR TEACHERS AT THE CAMPUSES TODAY.
THAT WAS ALWAYS A BLAST TO SEE THEM AND MAKE THEM FEEL, ONCE AGAIN SPECIAL, A LITTLE EXTRA BONUS DAY, ON TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK, WE THREW IN AN EXTRA DAY, HOPE THEY ENJOYED THAT.
WITH THAT, THIS IS ALWAYS AN EXCITING TIME OF THE YEAR.

IT'S ALWAYS A GOOD SPECIAL TIME WITH EVERYONE.
THANK YOU STAFF FOR STAYING IN.
I KNOW IT'S BEEN A LITTLE BIT LONG NIGHT TONIGHT, BUT VERY GOOD INFORMATION, WE APPRECIATE EVERYTHING PRESENTED TO US, VERY HELPFUL IN WHAT WE'RE DOING.
I COULD NOT BE REMISS UNLESS I DID TELL YOU ALL, WITH 25 SECONDS LEFT, THE STARS ARE UP TO THE ZERO.
IT LOOKS LIKE WE ARE GOING TO THE NEXT ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS.
GOLD STARS FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO KNOW THE STAR SCORE THAT ARE WATCHING US ON TV AND WATCHING US INSTEAD OF THE STARS GAME, WE JUST NEED TO LET THEM KNOW WHAT THE SCORE WAS.
WITH THAT, I WILL GO TO MY LEFT AND START WITH MS. MARY FOR BOARD COMMENTS.
[13. Board Comments]
>> I WANT TO THANK EVERYBODY FOR STAYING LATE TONIGHT, I KNOW IT WAS A LONG MEETING.
I ALSO WANT TO THANK OUR CAMPUSES FOR LETTING US COME OUT AND CELEBRATE OUR TEACHERS TODAY AND EXTEND TEACHER APPRECIATION.
I WANT TO THANK MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS FOR CHIPPING IN AND FOR STUFFING BAGS AND BEING PART OF THE DELIVERY CREW.
I ALSO LOOK FORWARD TO CELEBRATING OUR GRADUATING SENIORS THIS FRIDAY, AND THAT'S PRETTY MUCH WHAT I'VE GOT THIS WEEK.
>> ONCE AGAIN, I WANT TO SAY [INAUDIBLE], THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE REPORTS, SUPERINTENDED REPORT.
THEY WERE EXTREMELY HELPFUL AND GIVEN US AN OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK AT.
VERY INTERESTED AS WE'VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THE BLOCK SCHEDULE AND DOUBLE BLOCK AND SOME OF THE THINGS, AND I KNOW WE REDUCE TABLE AND DO SOME DUMB BLOCK.
THIS GIVES US A FULL VIEW OF WHAT WE'RE POTENTIALLY GOING FORWARD IN THE FUTURE.
REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT TEACHER FEATURE.
FOR THE CTE PROGRAMS, I WANT TO REALLY SAY THANK YOU FOR LOOKING INTO CPT PROGRAMS IN HR DEPARTMENT AND SO MANY OTHER DEPARTMENTS, THE FINANCE DEPARTMENT, FOR REALLY KEEPING IT BALANCED AND THE FINANCING, MAKING SURE WE HAVE AND GO OUT AND TRY TO FIND THE BEST TALENT AS POSSIBLE AND REALLY EDUCATE OUR KIDS ENCUMBERED WITH CURRICULUM AND EVERYTHING ELSE.
MS. ROBERT IS WORKING WITH OUR SCHOOLS AND EVERYTHING ELSE AND MAKING SURE OUR STUDENTS ARE GETTING ACCOLADES AND AWARDS AND SIMILAR THINGS.
REALLY WANT TO THANK YOU AND THE CONSTRUCTION REPORT.
WITH THAT, I DON'T HAVE ANY OTHER THINGS, BUT A BIG THANK YOU TO THE TEACHERS.
OUR SCHOOL YEAR IS WINDING DOWN, AND WOULD JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU ON THIS TEACHER APPRECIATION, YOU TEACHERS ARE WONDERFUL AND WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOU. THANK YOU.
>> I DON'T HAVE TOO MUCH TO ADD TONIGHT.
JUST THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ALL STAFF THAT ARE HERE, ADMINISTRATION, EVERYONE THAT'S WORKED TO PUT ALL THIS INFORMATION TOGETHER FOR US.
IT'S AMAZING HOW EVERY YEAR GOES BY FASTER AND FASTER.
IT'S AMAZING GRADUATION IS ON FRIDAY, I'M EXCITED ABOUT THAT.
I'M EXCITED ABOUT WHAT THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR BRINGS.
I KNOW THAT SUMMER IS GOING TO FLY BY, BUT I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THE THINGS WE HAVE TEED UP BOTH IN THE SHORT-TERM IN TERMS OF THE SCHEDULE CHANGE, LONG TERM IN TERMS OF THE NEW CAMPUSES, THE GROWTH THAT WE'RE ACCOMMODATING FOR OUR STUDENTS, AND JUST WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR LITTLE ELM.
>> DEFINITELY WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO ALL THE STAFF FOR STAYING LATE.
IT'S GREAT BEING ON CAMPUSES TODAY.
SEEING THE FINE ART SIGNING DAY WAS A FIRST, BUT IT WAS ONE OF MANY I WOULD SAY FOR LIVE ALONE.
I THINK TONIGHT, AS LONG AS THE MEETING WAS IT WAS STILL REALLY REFLECTS WHY LITTLE ELM IS THE DESTINATION DISTRICT, SO MANY ACCOLADES TO OUR KIDS, OUR STAFF, OUR STUDENTS, TO EVERYONE.
I WANT TO SPECIAL SHOUT OUT TO OUR TEACHERS, SAY THANK YOU.
YOU DEFINITELY ARE OUR HEROES, AND ENJOY YOUR SUMMER BREAK.
[02:35:01]
>> SO I'M VERY, VERY EXCITED ABOUT MY NEW OPPORTUNITY.
I'M MAKING EYE CONTACT WITH BIG DADDY WONDERFULNESS, THE UNCONQUERABLE NICK THOMPSON.
BECAUSE THIS IS MY LAST BOARD MEETING.
I WON'T BE ABLE TO MAKE THE BOARD MEETING IN JUNE, AND SO TONIGHT IS MY LAST TIME BEING IN THIS ROOM ON THIS SIDE WITH YOU GUYS.
BUT I HAVE LEARNED SOME BEAUTIFUL THINGS AND SOME HARD THINGS IN LAST THREE YEARS.
ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS I'VE NOTICED ABOUT MY WHOLE LIFE IS THAT I HAVE SO MUCH ON MY PLATE AND IT'S A RELIEF.
I HAVE TO TELL YOU HOW IT'S A RELIEF TO TAKE SOMETHING OFF AND HAVE A LITTLE BIT MORE TIME FOR MY GIRLS, FROM MY HUSBAND AND FOR OUR NON-PROFIT THAT WE HAVE THE ZERO-DAY COLLEGE PROJECTS.
SO I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU GUYS SUPPORT THE ZERO-DAY COLLEGE PROJECT AFTER I LEAVE.
WE HAVE THE MAYOR'S MATH CHALLENGE.
I STILL EXPECT YOU TO BE PRACTICED IN 15 MIN OF MATH EVERY DAY GETTING READY FOR THE COMPETITION NEXT YEAR.
I WANT TO SAY SOMETHING TO MY YOUNGEST TO LILY, BECAUSE SHE HAD A LOT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ELECTION.
SHE KNOWS THAT I'M FINE WITH NOT WINNING THE ELECTION.
BUT IF SOME OF YOU SAW SHE DID AN IMPROMPTU INTERVIEW WITH ME, THAT SHE DIDN'T GIVE ME HER QUESTIONS AHEAD OF TIME, SO I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT SHE WAS GOING TO BE ASKING AND SHE WANTED TO KNOW DID ANYBODY DISRESPECT ME? WAS ANYBODY BEING UNKIND? I SAID, WELL, I'M TRASH TALKING IN ANY COMPETITION IS TO BE EXPECTED, BUT WE DON'T HAVE A REFEREE IN POLITICS.
I LATER REALIZED PART OF THIS IS THAT I'M NOT A POLITICIAN.
I'VE BEEN IN EDUCATION THIS SPRING FOR 14 YEARS.
MY GRADE ON MY PAPERS BEFORE I CAME HERE TONIGHT.
THANK YOU, LORD. BECAUSE I KNOW I'M GOING TO BE THIS LONG.
I'VE BEEN A CONSULTANT AT A SEMINARY SCHOOL 21 YEARS THIS FALL AT SMU.
THIS SUNDAY IS MY 22ND ANNIVERSARY AS A PSYCHOTHERAPIST AND BUSINESS FOR MYSELF.
THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT I GIVE MYSELF TO FULLY.
YOU MAY HEAR MY VOICE CRACKED A LITTLE BIT BECAUSE SOME OUTRIGHT LIES WERE SAID DURING THE ELECTION.
I HAD TO EXPLAIN THEM TO MY YOUNGEST CHILD, AND THAT WAS ABOUT WHEN I WAS READY TO BE DONE WITH EVERYTHING, WAS WHEN I HAD TO EXPLAIN THINGS TO HER BECAUSE SHE'S STILL A STUDENT AND LITTLE N MINUS D. FOR THAT REASON, I WANT TO IMPLORE OUR DISTRICT AND OUR BOARD TO WHEN WE HAVE THESE ELECTIONS, TO THINK ABOUT OUR CHILDREN, THEY ARE WATCHING.
THEY UNDERSTAND WHAT'S GOING ON, AND I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT THE PEOPLE WHO LEAD THEM LEAD WITH INTEGRITY AND BY THAT IT MEANS THAT YOU ALSO DON'T LET LIES BE TOLD ABOUT SOMEONE AND DO NOTHING.
I'M A PERSON THAT CHILDREN'S TRUST AND THEIR FAMILIES TRUST BECAUSE I HAVE ALWAYS TAKEN ACTION WHEN I SEE SOMETHING WRONG HAPPENING.
THERE'S NO CHILD WHO'S COME TO ME WITH A PROBLEM WHERE I JUST SAY, WELL, I'M SORRY, THERE'S NOTHING I CAN DO.
WE WORK TOGETHER TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WE CAN DO.
I WOULD EXPECT THAT IN THE FUTURE, YES THINGS GO ON IN ELECTIONS ALL THE TIME THEY'RE JUST UP AND DOWN.
BUT WHEN SOMETHING HAS AN OUT NOW RAD LIE, I FEEL LIKE THE BOARD, THE DISTRICT, ANYONE WHO ACTUALLY SEES IT, NEEDS TO DO MORE THAN JUST SAY I'M NOT INVOLVED.
IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE MAINTAIN OUR ROLE AS LEADERS AT ALL TIMES, NOT FORGIVING EVERYBODY INVOLVED.
THAT'S ANOTHER MATTER BECAUSE THEY REQUIRE SOMEONE TO STEP UP TO TAKE OWNERSHIP AND ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY AND ACTUALLY COME TO ME AND TALK ABOUT WHAT HAPPENED, AND SO I'M WAITING ON IT FROM THE PERSON WHO GOT MY SEAT OR THE SEAT.
MR. BURTON I'M WAITING ON YOUR APOLOGY, AND THAT CONVERSATION WITH YOU,.
FORMER TRUSTEE LEANNA HARDING, I'M WAITING ON THAT CONVERSATION WITH YOU.
EVERYONE ELSE I THINK THAT WE'VE ALREADY HAD SOME INTERACTIONS AND I'LL LEAD THOSE NAMES OFF THE TABLE RIGHT NOW.
BUT I DO WANT TO BE CLEAR, ESPECIALLY TO OUR STUDENTS, THAT WHEN YOU REACH OUT TO SOMEBODY FOR HELP, THEY NEED TO ACTUALLY HELP YOU.
I'M GOING TO PUSH SOMETHING RIGHT NOW BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE OUR STANDARD NEEDS TO BE MET AND A STANDARD BEARER NEEDS TO ALWAYS BE IN THIS ROOM AND THESE SEATS.
SO MR. ENGLISH, I EXPECT WHEN I LEAVE THAT PEOPLE CAN COME TO YOU AND TRUST YOU THAT YOU WILL DO THE RIGHT THING AT ALL TIMES.
THAT EVEN BEHIND CLOSED DOORS PICKED PEOPLE CAN TRUST YOUR INTEGRITY BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE WHO LOOK JUST LIKE ME AND YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEBODY THEY CAN TRUST AND THEY NEED TO KNOW THAT THEY CAN TRUST YOU.
RIGHT NOW, I CAN'T SAY THAT I CAN GIVE THEM THAT 100%.
I EXPECT THAT WE WILL ALL DO BETTER.
IT'S MY HOPE THAT WE WILL ALL DO BETTER SO THAT OUR CHILDREN CAN ACTUALLY TRUST US.
I FEEL LIKE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING THAT I WAS ABLE TO DO THESE PAST THREE YEARS ACTUALLY WAS OF COURSE ALL WORK TOGETHER.
WE WORKED TOGETHER ON POSSIBLY THE MOST DIFFICULT THING I'VE SEEN ANY SCHOOL DISTRICT DO, AND THAT WAS GETTING NEW SUPERINTENDENT.
MR. LAMB I JUST WANTED TO TELL YOU THANK YOU FOR TRUSTING US WITH YOUR TIME AND TALENT BECAUSE I KNOW YOU'RE AWAY FROM YOUR FAMILY.
[02:40:01]
I HAVE BEEN IMPRESSED.I THINK WE MADE THE BEST DECISION AND I WANTED TO JUST TELL YOU I APPRECIATE THE LITTLE BIT OF TIME I GOT TO WORK WITH YOU.
I DO APPRECIATE IT. AGAIN, CONGRATULATIONS.
I APPRECIATE YOU. I REALLY, REALLY DO.
DAVID, I APPRECIATE YOU WORKING UNDER YOUR LEADERSHIP, AND I JUST WANT TO TELL YOU YOU'RE A LEADER A PERSON CAN FOLLOW, AND I APPRECIATE THAT VERY MUCH.
SONIA, I'M LOOKING DOWN AT YOU BECAUSE I'M TRYING TO LIKE HALFWAY, NOT LOOK BECAUSE YOU'RE SMILE, MAKES ME SMILE.
I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU SMILE AND DOWN THERE YOU DON'T HAVE ANY OTHER EMOTIONS BECAUSE THEN YOU GOING TO MAKE ME CRY.
SO I WON'T TELL YOU THAT I APPRECIATE YOU.
YOU JUST HAVE A WARM BREATH, GOOD AIR, ENERGY EVERY TIME I COME.
JASON, I WILL NEVER BET YOU AGAIN.
BUT I GUESS SNICKER DOODLES WHENEVER YOU NEED THEM.
DR. PEPPER, AND WHAT IS IT? TWENTY THREE SPECIAL.
>> TWENTY THREE DELICIOUS FLAVORS. [OVERLAPPING]
>> TWENTY THREE DELICIOUS FLAVORS.
LORD JESUS. I JUST WANT TO JUST TELL EVERYBODY, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK.
ALEX IS NOT HERE TONIGHT AND I'M SAD ABOUT THAT BECAUSE THAT'S A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP THEY REALLY DID GROW OVER ALL THIS TIME.
HIS WIFE, I DON'T KNOW IF PEOPLE NOTICED, WAS MY DAUGHTER'S FIRST TEACHER.
WHEN I WAS A YOUNG MOTHER, NOT EVEN TRUSTING ANYBODY SHE WAS THE FIRST PERSON I TRUSTED WITH MY DAUGHTER.
Y'ALL KNOW TO ME SHE'S AMAZING.
SHE'S TURNED OUT WELL, BUT THOSE EARLY YEARS, THAT'S WHEN EVERYTHING TAKES PLACE.
SO MS RISSA, I KNOW SOME THINGS DIDN'T WORK OUT WELL, BUT I REALLY WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU THAT I APPRECIATE EVERYTHING YOU'VE DONE FOR OUR DISTRICT.
I UNDERSTAND THAT SOMETIMES THINGS DON'T WORK OUT, BUT I DO WANT TO SAY I APPRECIATE HER WORK AS WELL.
I APPRECIATE YOU, ALEX, WHEREVER YOU ARE RIGHT NOW, WHICH YOU ARE SUPERHUMAN BROTHER WHO SURVIVED ALL ODDS.
I JUST WANT TO TELL YOU GUYS THAT I THINK OF YOU OFTEN.
EVERYBODY IN HERE, LET'S SAY, MS. BROWN, DR. [INAUDIBLE], ROSS, HOW TO FEEL.
WE'VE BEEN THROUGH SO MUCH THE FIRST CURVES AT CAR PARADE.
YOU GUYS ARE WONDERFUL TEAM OF PEOPLE AND I HOPE THAT AS THE PARENTS LISTEN AND THE STUDENTS LISTENING AND STAFF, THE TEACHERS THERE'S A LOT OF PEOPLE WORKING LIKE MAD BACK HERE TO JUST MAKE IT HAPPEN.
IT IS NOT EASY AND THEY WORK HARD AND I FEEL LIKE THEY DESERVE OUR RESPECT.
I DON'T KNOW WHERE WE'D GET THERE FROM.
STATE LEGISLATORS ARE DUE BAD TEACHERS, AND I REALLY HOPE THAT PEOPLE WILL BE KIND TO EACH OTHER. THAT'S THE MAIN THING.
I ALWAYS WORK THINGS OUT QUICKLY, BUT THINGS CAN'T WORK OUT OVER TIME.
I'M HOPING THAT THAT WILL HAPPEN OVER TIME, THAT EVERYTHING WILL WORK OUT AND WE'LL ALL BE IN THIS TOGETHER.
I HOPE MY BOARD PRESIDENT TO MY LEFT WILL ACTUALLY READ THE BOOK THAT HE ASSIGNED TO ALL OF US.
SO WHEN I SEE YOU ON FRIDAY, ON FRIDAY CELEBRATION KIDS, PARENTS, I HAVE BEEN GETTING YOUR TEXT MESSAGES.
THIS IS MY LAST BOARD MEETING, BUT I WILL BE THERE FRIDAY.
WE WILL HAVE A GREAT TIME BECAUSE THAT'D BE MY WAY TO CELEBRATE AND GO OUT IN STYLE BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW I GOT THE BEST ROBE AND I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT.
THAT'S ALL I GOT TO SAY. I'M DONE.
>> THANK YOU, DR. THOMPSON, MR. LAMBERT, SUPERINTENDENT, COMMENTS?
[14. Superintendent Comments]
I GAVE YOU THAT CAKE PAN BACK SO YOU CAN FILL IT UP LIKE WE CAN TRY THAT.
YOU STILL KNOW HOW TO GET HERE, YOU STILL KNOW HOW TO, SO BE LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT AT SOME POINT.
THANK Y'ALL. IT'S BEEN A GREAT EVENING. THANK YOU.
>> WITH THAT, DO I HAVE A MOTION TO ADJOURN?
ALL THOSE IN FAVOR RAISE YOUR HAND.
ALL THOSE OPPOSED. 09:43 PM WE CLOCK OUT.
[NOISE]
